Job Summary
Ifakara Health Institute (IHI) is seeking qualified Research Scientist Interns to support the Malaria Atlas Project (MAP) African regional node. This role supports the growing demand for country-specific and subnational malaria risk mapping analyses, strengthens technical support to National Malaria Programs (NMPs), and contributes to leadership, research & development (R&D), and advanced modelling and analytical capacity building for endemic-country researchers and institutions across Africa.
The internship offers hands-on experience in advanced research, modelling, data analytics, and stakeholder engagement within a high-impact public health research environment.
Key Responsibilities
Research, Analysis & Dissemination
- Strengthen research dissemination and analytical capacities while responding to technical queries from National Malaria Programs (NMPs) and other malaria stakeholders in endemic African countries.
- Enhance advanced analytical and programming skills through applied research activities.
- Conduct data gathering, extraction, management, and visualization.
- Support development of dashboards, analytical tools, and modelling outputs.
- Design and implement small, time-bound research projects that contribute to the objectives and scope of MAP initiatives.
Collaboration, Compliance & Safety
- Participate in scientific conferences, technical meetings, and project forums.
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary research teams and partners.
- Comply with IHI institutional policies, procedures, and core values.
- Take reasonable care of personal health and safety and avoid actions that may endanger others.
- Identify workplace hazards, apply appropriate controls, and report all injuries, illnesses, or near-miss incidents promptly.
Desired Skills
- Strong ability to examine, analyze, and process data using tools such as R, Python, and QGIS.
- Experience or interest in dashboard development, machine learning tools, and a strong willingness to expand technical expertise.
- High attention to detail, strong self-review discipline, and effective time management skills.
- Commitment to ethical research conduct and adherence to IHI core values.
Essential Qualifications
- Master’s Degree in Statistics, Mathematics, Data Science, or other relevant quantitative disciplines.
- Knowledge of public health, disease epidemiology, vector-borne diseases, and ecological systems is an added advantage.
Preferred Language Skills
- Multilingual proficiency is an advantage:
