As the company strengthens and expands its editorial operations, it is seeking two experienced and highly motivated journalists to join its newsroom.
Job Summary
The successful candidates will be responsible for identifying, researching, developing, and producing original, accurate, balanced, and well-researched journalism covering Tanzania, Africa, and major international developments relevant to Monitech Africa’s audience.
Qualifications and Requirements
Applicants must:
- Have above-average fluency in written and spoken English.
- Hold a university degree in Journalism, Mass Communication, or a related field from a recognized institution; OR hold a university degree in another field together with at least a Diploma in Journalism.
- Have at least three (3) years of professional experience in the media industry.
- Demonstrate the ability to write accurate, balanced, original, and well-researched news stories and features.
- Have strong interviewing, research, fact-checking, and verification skills.
- Be computer literate and comfortable working with digital publishing platforms.
- Be able to work independently and under tight deadlines.
- Additional professional training or further studies in journalism, digital media, broadcasting, or communication will be an added advantage.
Key Responsibilities and Accountabilities
The successful candidates will:
- Research, write, edit, and produce original news stories, features, interviews, and special reports.
- Produce multimedia content, including:
- Text
- Photographs
- Audio
- Video
- Other digital formats
- Cover breaking news and important developments in Tanzania and across Africa.
- Work closely with the News Desk and editorial team to identify and develop strong story ideas.
- Keep the News Editor regularly updated on breaking and developing stories.
- Conduct interviews and verify information using credible and reliable sources.
- Develop and maintain a strong network of contacts and sources across different sectors.
- Identify opportunities for exclusive, investigative, and high-impact stories.
- Collaborate with reporters and editors on major stories and special coverage.
- Develop innovative approaches to digital and multimedia storytelling.
- Ensure published content complies with:
- Monitech Africa’s editorial standards
- Copyright requirements
- Journalistic ethics
- Applicable media laws
- Ensure stories are original and properly sourced, with no:
- Plagiarism
- Unauthorized copying
- Misleading attribution
- Publication of unverified information
Knowledge and Experience
Candidates should demonstrate:
- A strong track record in news reporting and feature writing.
- Excellent news judgment and an understanding of professional journalism.
- Strong knowledge of Tanzanian national affairs and major regional and international developments.
- Good understanding of:
- Political issues
- Economic issues
- Business
- Technology
- Social issues
- Development issues affecting Tanzania and Africa
- Strong understanding of:
- Journalistic ethics
- Source verification
- Copyright
- Responsible digital publishing
- Knowledge of Tanzania’s media laws and regulations, including the Media Services Act, is an advantage.
- Ability to identify potential editorial, ethical, or legal risks before publication.
