Job Summary
Safal Group is seeking a Head Sales, Mining Sector to aggressively spearhead the penetration of the East African mining sector and establish Safal Group as a primary technical partner.
The successful candidate will be responsible for building strong relationships with mine engineers, procurement heads and other key decision-makers while driving sales of a comprehensive range of steel products and engineered solutions. These include HR, CR, metal-coated and colour-coated sheets, structural steel, pipes, Pre-Engineered Buildings (PEBs), modular houses and specialized underground roof support systems.
Key Responsibilities
1. Ecosystem Penetration and Relationship Building
- Conduct frequent and proactive visits to remote mine sites across Tanzania, DRC, Kenya, Uganda and Rwanda.
- Build strong relationships with site-level decision-makers, project engineers and procurement teams.
- Manage the registration and maintenance of Safal entities on Local Content Vendor Lists.
- Develop and maintain relationships within the mining supplier ecosystem through consistent field engagement and networking.
2. Technical Sales and Solution Engineering
- Drive sales of HR, CR, metal-coated and colour-coated flat steel products.
- Sell pipes, tubes and hot-rolled structural steel products, including angles, channels and beams.
- Market and coordinate sales of Pre-Engineered Buildings (PEBs), roofing systems and prefabricated or container-converted houses.
- Promote solutions for warehouses, factories, workshops and modular staff housing.
- Drive technical sales of underground roof support systems, including split sets, washers and mining mesh.
- Provide consultative technical advice on steel grades, coating systems suitable for corrosive mining environments and structural layouts.
3. Commercial and Operational Execution
- Manage the complete tender lifecycle, from identifying opportunities and conducting site measurements to preparing technical quotations and final bids.
- Prepare accurate Bills of Quantities (BQ) and technical quotations based on prevailing market rates and approved margin policies.
- Coordinate with the supply chain team to facilitate Just-in-Time deliveries to remote mine sites.
- Ensure effective execution of projects while meeting commercial and operational requirements.
4. Team Leadership and Multi-Country Coverage
- Lead, coach and performance-manage a four-member cross-border sales team covering Tanzania, DRC and Uganda, as well as the Rwanda export market.
- Set volume, margin and collection targets for Sales Managers.
- Conduct structured monthly reviews covering sales pipelines, tenders, site coverage and customer conversion.
- Define territory ownership to minimize overlap and channel conflicts.
- Coordinate with ALAF, SRL and UBL to ensure mines are billed through the appropriate operating company while maintaining a unified Safal Group presence.
- Oversee DRC engagement with 51% Congolese-owned, ARSP-certified suppliers.
- Ensure partner appointments comply with statutory and Group requirements.
- Build the team’s technical selling capabilities across flat products, pipes, PEBs, modular housing and underground roof support systems.
5. Quality, Safety and Compliance
- Ensure supplied steel products and structures meet international mining standards and company quality requirements.
- Comply with and enforce mine-site safety protocols during site visits and technical inspections.
Budgetary Responsibilities
- Achieve and exceed sales volume and margin targets for the mining segment.
- Ensure project deliveries remain within approved commercial budgets.
- Manage the consolidated mining-segment sales, margin and collection budget across Tanzania, DRC, Uganda and the Rwanda export market.
- Manage travel, site-visit and market-development budgets for direct reports.
- Review individual budget performance on a monthly basis.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in:
- Civil Engineering
- Mechanical Engineering
- Mining Engineering
Experience Required
- Overall experience: 10–15 years.
- At least 5 years of hands-on experience in Technical Sales or Site Engineering within the mining or heavy industrial sector.
- Demonstrable experience in “hunter” sales roles, including breaking into new industrial markets and managing high-value tenders.
- Experience with structural steel fabrication, PEB systems and underground support hardware.
- 3–5 years of experience leading or coordinating a geographically distributed sales team across more than one country is strongly preferred.
