Job Summary

The Relationship Manager – SME will support the Head of SME Banking in achieving revenue and productivity targets while delivering excellent customer service. The role will also involve developing and managing a high-performing team of Relationship Officers through coaching, talent management and specialized training.

The position will further support SME Regional Managers and Relationship Officers in processing customer applications from approval through to payment.

Key Responsibilities

1. Business Management – 40%

  • Achieve agreed asset targets by managing and supporting a team of Relationship Officers through the provision of a wide range of products and services to SME clients.
  • Develop and market the bank’s business through engagement with SME customers, high-net-worth individuals and other prospective clients.
  • Support Relationship Officers in achieving sales and performance targets by proactively monitoring daily scorecards, monthly financial and operational reviews, call reports and business opportunity pipelines.
  • Monitor and manage company and client applications to ensure satisfactory returns to the bank.
  • Engage with other departments and Product Specialists to ensure customer applications are handled effectively within agreed SLAs.
  • Work with the Risk Department to build awareness and ensure compliance with KYC, AML, Financial Sanctions and Prohibitions of Business Activity policies within SME Banking.
  • Coordinate and organize SME Lending Forum meetings to support regular reviews of lending activities.
  • Ensure customer recruitment is aligned with the bank’s risk appetite.
  • Ensure profitable customers receive appropriate attention while problematic customers are identified and managed proactively.

2. People Management and Development – 20%

  • Provide direct leadership and supervision to Relationship Officers.
  • Motivate staff and ensure recognition through NBC recognition schemes.
  • Create an empowering environment that encourages individual ownership and initiative.
  • Set high performance and productivity standards for the team.
  • Develop and communicate annual plans to optimize financial, human and physical resources.
  • Work with the Head of SME Banking to develop annual resource and capacity plans.
  • Build and develop a high-performing team through performance management and coaching.
  • Discuss and finalize performance management plans and ratings for the regional team.
  • Identify training and development needs for Relationship Officers and ensure appropriate coaching or training is provided.
  • Drive employee development and engagement across cluster and branch teams.
  • Conduct effective performance management for direct reports.
  • Monitor and ensure that all Branch Key Performance Indicators are achieved.
  • Share knowledge, experience and best practices with branch managers, Relationship Officers, branch teams and the wider business.
  • Ensure direct reports encourage ownership, initiative and accountability.
  • Plan and manage resources according to current and future business requirements.
  • Participate actively in recruitment and exit processes for direct reports.
  • Evaluate staffing requests from branch managers and reallocate headcount between branches where necessary, within the approved area headcount budget.
  • Initiate HR processes for direct reports when required, including disciplinary processes, leave management, learning and development, and talent identification, in consultation with HR.
  • Act as an escalation point for grievance cases involving Relationship Officers in the region.
  • Pursue personal development to improve effectiveness and address areas for development.

3. Customer Service Management – 15%

  • Support Relationship Officers in managing client experience through on-the-job training and coaching on products and services.
  • Maintain accurate records of customer complaints, discussions and correspondence.
  • Provide timely feedback on resolved and unresolved customer issues.
  • Coordinate client relationships and activities with other departments within the bank.
  • Use customer feedback to improve products and services.
  • Participate in weekly performance reviews and knowledge-sharing meetings with Branch Managers and Relationship Officers.
  • Maintain regular communication and information sharing with Retail and Corporate Credit, Corporate Banking, SMU, ICU, Treasury and Legal departments.
  • Coordinate local functions, community, government and business development activities.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with Product Specialists across Corporate Banking, Treasury and Retail Banking.
  • Understand and communicate aggregated cluster requirements and customer feedback to help shape customer propositions and product offerings.
  • Ensure high-quality and knowledgeable service delivery in branches.
  • Build motivated, committed and customer-focused branch teams.
  • Visit high-net-worth and key clients when requested by Branch Managers or Relationship Officers.
  • Monitor branch network service scores and develop improvement plans with direct reports.
  • Collaborate across functions to maintain high standards of service delivery.
  • Participate in high-net-worth client meetings involving complex scenarios, reviews and consultations.

4. Risk, Control and Compliance Management – 15%

  • Work with the Risk Department to build awareness and ensure compliance with KYC, AML, Financial Sanctions and Prohibitions of Business Activity policies.
  • Ensure all Relationship Officers review their portfolios monthly and keep KYC, AML and sanctions documentation up to date.
  • Escalate unresolved KYC requirements to the appropriate mandated holders.
  • Ensure Relationship Officers are accountable for the accuracy and quality of customer documents, loan applications, ICU checklists and related documentation.
  • Ensure the region operates in compliance with company policies and regulatory requirements.
  • Support satisfactory results in local and Group audits.
  • Monitor branch operations and control performance to ensure required branch standards are maintained.
  • Review branch remediation action plans where necessary.
  • Review branch incident reports and take appropriate action, including escalation and disciplinary action where required.
  • Sign off dormant accounts and refunds above Branch Manager limits.
  • Understand and manage risks and risk events relevant to the role.
  • Contribute to improving the bank’s risk profile through effective governance, risk management, controls and compliance.
  • Ensure financial crime matters are addressed within required timelines, including annual PEP and HRR/LR reviews.
  • Control Non-Performing Assets within regulatory and industry standards.
  • Manage network-related non-branch expenses, including disturbance allowances and transportation costs, within approved budgets.

5. Change Management – 10%

  • Keep up to date with changes to policies, procedures and circulars.
  • Pursue self-development relevant to the career path and role.
  • Complete all required compliance training.
  • Manage major organizational changes within the cluster, including organizational structure, IT/system and process changes.
  • Support process improvement initiatives.
  • Communicate strategic changes to branch management and ensure changes in targets are agreed and understood.

Education and Experience

Applicants should have:

  • A Bachelor’s degree, Advanced Diploma, Diploma or equivalent qualification in Finance, Accounting, Economics, Business Administration or another related field.
  • At least 5 years of experience in leadership and SME banking/business areas.
