Job Purpose

The Engineer 1 – UG Planning will be responsible for producing underground mine designs that meet the mine’s budget requirements, production plans, and strategic objectives while remaining consistent with AngloGold Ashanti’s vision and values.

The successful candidate will support underground mine planning activities, develop mine designs and work packages, analyze operational data, and contribute to the safe and efficient extraction of the underground orebody.

Key Responsibilities

• Support systems within the Mine Planning Department to deliver mine plans for execution and maximize the value of the underground orebody.

• Deliver all work packages required by the underground mine production department under the direction of the Senior Planning Engineer.

• Support and comply with mine planning systems that promote effective work planning, safe working practices, and operational performance monitoring.

• Analyze data relating to short-term production, equipment performance, and safety metrics.

• Maintain a safe working environment by complying with Safety, Health, Environment and Community (SHE & C) plans, procedures, systems, and processes.

• Develop and maintain constructive relationships with colleagues, business partners, and other stakeholders to resolve operational issues effectively.

• Support strategies that improve the delivery of mine plans, designs, and work packages.

• Contribute to the adoption of innovative equipment, technologies, and work methods that maximize the value of the underground orebody.

• Ensure the timely delivery of work packages, including stope notes, development designs, and grout plans, to the underground mine production department.

• Proactively communicate potential threats to budget delivery, including stope physicals, to the Senior Planning Engineer.

• Ensure all potential stoping material is reviewed as soon as a grade control model becomes available so that scheduling gaps can be identified well in advance.

• Follow applicable standards, procedures, and guidelines for all mine planning activities.

• Ensure mine planning tasks and processes are properly documented and controlled.

Required Qualifications and Education

• A degree in Mining Engineering.

• Professional registration with the Engineers Registration Board (ERB).

Required Work Experience

Applicants must have:

• At least three years of operational experience in an underground mine.

• Experience using mine design and scheduling software, including Deswik, Studio UG, Vulcan, and Aegis.

• Experience in mine planning.

• Experience in underground drilling and blasting.

• Experience in underground mine ventilation.

Required Knowledge and Skills

• Broad technical knowledge relevant to large-scale bulk and semi-selective underground mining.

• A sound understanding of mining value drivers and operational risks within a business unit.

• Good verbal and written communication skills.

• Strong report-writing skills.

• The ability to support safe, efficient, and effective underground mine planning operations.
