Northern Engineering Works Limited (NEWL) is seeking a QS (Quantity Surveyor) Engineer to join the Projects Department. The successful candidate will be a vital part of construction projects, ensuring cost-efficiency and project success through methodical analysis and strong negotiation skills.

Job Summary

The QS Engineer is responsible for analyzing budgets, preparing quantity estimates, and negotiating with contractors and vendors. You will be expected to build strong relationships with clients and site managers, using a methodical approach and superb interpersonal skills to ensure the best possible project outcomes.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide guidance, technical oversight, and professional advice to the project team on construction quantification and estimation.

  • Prepare realistic and up-to-date construction estimates aligned with work plans and budgets.

  • Review bidding documents, Requests for Proposals (RFP), and pre-qualification documents based on standard professional and borrower documents.

  • Review contractual claims to establish genuineness and consistency with measured works and contract terms.

  • Verify guarantees and bonds for construction and rehabilitation works.

  • Review the application of contract variations and advise the Project Coordinator on value for money.

  • Conduct regular site visits to monitor quality of works and address contract management issues.

  • Participate in pre-site visits, pre-proposal meetings, and negotiations.

  • Coordinate activities with other development partners as required.

Skill Requirements

  • Education: Bachelor’s Degree in Quantity Surveying, Building Economics, or equivalent qualifications.

  • Experience: 5 years of experience in quantity surveying within the construction sector.

  • Technical Skills: Proficiency in construction estimating software, cost management tools, and Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).

  • Contracts: In-depth knowledge of industrial construction contracts and procurement processes.

  • Communication: Fluency in spoken and written English; working knowledge of Kiswahili is desirable.

  • Abilities: Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to write lucid reports.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Must be a Citizen of Tanzania.

  • Bachelor’s degree in Quantity Surveying or a related field.

  • Must be registered/licensed as a Professional Engineer (AQRB).

  • A minimum of 5 years of working experience and industry knowledge is strongly desired.
