Job Opportunity: Head of Biomedical Engineering (BME)

Location: Dar es Salaam, Tanzania
Reports To: Country Director

AHN combines global best practices in kidney care with practical local operating experience to provide industry-leading clinical outcomes. While in most developed countries nearly all patients requiring dialysis receive care, in Africa, less than 10% currently have access. AHN is rapidly scaling its services to expand access to high-quality, affordable kidney care across the region.


Position Summary

AHN is seeking an exceptional leader to serve as Head of Biomedical Engineering (BME). The ideal candidate will manage the BME team, focusing on:

  • Equipment maintenance and conservation
  • Hospital water control and treatment
  • Technical support across all AHN facilities

This role is responsible for ensuring proper installation, operation, and maintenance of all medical equipment, evaluating contracted services, monitoring project execution, and ensuring compliance with timelines, budgets, and quality standards. The Head of BME will also develop policies, standards, and procedures for the biomedical sector and manage team development, training, and onboarding.


Key Responsibilities

Leadership & Team Management

  • Lead and manage the Biomedical Engineering team across AHN facilities
  • Identify staffing needs, provide training, and ensure team performance
  • Promote a motivating and compliant work environment aligned with AHN values

Operations & Maintenance

  • Oversee installation, maintenance, and operation of all medical equipment
  • Conduct on-site inspections and identify areas requiring maintenance
  • Develop, implement, and monitor maintenance procedures

Contract & Project Oversight

  • Monitor outsourced services and ensure compliance with contracts
  • Evaluate technical proposals and specifications for materials, equipment, and services
  • Guide project execution to ensure timelines, budgets, and quality objectives are met

Compliance & Strategic Planning

  • Ensure adherence to local health regulations, internal standards, and quality management systems
  • Contribute to strategic planning, budgeting, and resource management
  • Maintain accurate technical documentation and inventory control

Communication & Engagement

  • Disseminate AHN’s mission, vision, and values across teams
  • Foster discipline, ethical behavior, and professionalism within the team
  • Engage with suppliers, customers, and stakeholders to maintain relationships

Desired Competencies & Qualifications

  • Education: Degree in Biomedical Engineering, Biomedical Science, Mechanical/Electrical Engineering, or related field
  • Experience:
    • Minimum 2 years of technical expertise in biomedical engineering
    • At least 5 years in management or leadership roles
    • Experience in healthcare sector preferred
  • Skills:
    • People management and leadership
    • Project management and data analysis
    • Problem-solving and analytical thinking
    • Negotiation and relationship management
    • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint
    • Strong written and oral communication
