Position: Mining Engineer

Reports To: Senior Mining Engineer
Duty Station: Nyanzaga Site, Sengerema District, Mwanza
Contract Duration: 24 Months

Position Purpose

The Mining Engineer supports safe and efficient open-pit mining operations in line with the SMCL Mining Management Plan (MMP). The role involves preparing short-term mine plans, pit designs, and production schedules, monitoring execution, and providing technical support to Operations, Drill & Blast, and Mine Geology teams.

The position works closely with the mining contractor and internal stakeholders to ensure mine plans are practical, clearly communicated, and aligned with production, cost, and HSE targets.

Key Roles & Responsibilities

1. Health, Safety & Environment (HSE)

• Actively promote SMCL HSE standards in all planning and field activities
• Participate in risk assessments, Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs), inspections, and incident/near-miss reporting
• Ensure all designs and schedules comply with legal, environmental, and community obligations

2. Mine Planning & Scheduling

• Prepare practical short-term pit designs and staging consistent with the MMP and Life of Mine (LOM) plan
• Develop and maintain daily, weekly, and monthly production schedules (ore, waste, drill & blast, haulage)
• Issue clear dig plans, loading plans, and haulage instructions to support ore routing, ROM pad, and Waste Rock Dump (WRD) management

3. Drill & Blast Support

• Contribute to drill & blast designs and documentation to ensure safe and effective blasting operations

4. Performance Monitoring & Reporting

• Track plan vs. actual performance (tonnes, BCM, strip ratio, fleet productivity, drill & blast results)
• Recommend corrective actions to improve operational performance
• Collect, validate, and store production and contractor data for end-of-month and management reporting

5. Technical Support & Coaching

• Provide day-to-day technical guidance and coaching to junior engineers and technicians

Qualifications & Licences

• Bachelor of Science (BSc) in Mining Engineering or related technical discipline
• Valid driving licence
• Minimum of 3 years’ experience in open-pit mining
