About AKHST

The Aga Khan Health Service, Tanzania (AKHST) is part of the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN). In 2018, AKHST completed a major expansion of the Aga Khan Hospital, Dar es Salaam, increasing capacity to a 170-bed ultramodern facility with tertiary care, referral, and teaching capabilities.

Phase II of the hospital’s expansion focused on strengthening clinical services, including:

  • Comprehensive Cardiology, Oncology, and Neurosciences programs
  • Expansion of Orthopaedics and Trauma, Diagnostic Imaging, Critical Care, and Women & Child Health programs

The hospital is JCI-accredited, reflecting world-class quality and patient service standards. It is also a teaching site for Aga Khan University, offering postgraduate medical education programs leading to Master of Medicine degrees, as well as accredited internships.

As part of an integrated health system approach, AKHST has established 26 outreach clinics across Tanzania, with plans for 35 facilities linked to the Dar es Salaam hospital.


Position Summary

The Operating Theatre Nurse Manager is responsible for:

  • Planning, supervising, and optimizing operations in the Operating Theatre
  • Ensuring safe, high-quality patient care
  • Managing staff and resources efficiently
  • Collaborating with surgeons and multidisciplinary teams

This role requires in-depth knowledge of nursing management principles, productivity optimization, and teaching/learning approaches, alongside the ability to apply nursing theories effectively in clinical practice.


Key Responsibilities

Leadership & Management

  • Direct and coordinate nursing services in the Operating Theatre
  • Provide clinical supervision and support to staff
  • Counsel and mentor staff to address performance issues
  • Conduct performance appraisals and maintain competency records
  • Lead in developing, implementing, and evaluating innovative care models
  • Participate in program planning, service redesign, and operational improvement initiatives

Clinical & Operational Oversight

  • Ensure availability and proper management of equipment, supplies, medicines, and instruments
  • Supervise inventory and resource utilization
  • Monitor compliance with hospital policies, nursing standards, and regulatory requirements
  • Lead efforts in quality improvement and patient safety
  • Prepare monthly KPIs and reports for relevant committees
  • Follow up on audit recommendations, mortality, and morbidity reviews

Staff & Resource Management

  • Manage FTE, workloads, and rostering to achieve high efficiency
  • Handle staff grievances, complaints, and disciplinary measures
  • Facilitate staff training and professional development
  • Ensure compliance with AKHD and Ministry of Health policies

Education & Experience Requirements

  • Diploma in Nursing from a recognized institution
  • Current registration with the Tanzania Nursing and Midwifery Council (TNMC)
  • Valid Nursing License in Tanzania
  • Minimum of 8 years of nursing experience, including 2 years in Operating Theatre practice
