Job Overview
The Legal Counsel is an intermediate-level role responsible for providing legal advice and support to Citibank Tanzania Limited. The position reports directly to the Country General Counsel.
The primary objective is to deliver legal guidance across a broad range of practice areas, ensuring compliance with Tanzanian laws and regulations. The role requires a strong understanding of business needs combined with sound legal judgment to provide proactive, risk-aware, and commercially practical solutions.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide legal advice and support to Country Business Management on legal, regulatory, and control matters, ensuring risks (legal, regulatory, reputational) are effectively managed.
- Support strategic initiatives by advising on relevant laws, regulations, and industry practices impacting business operations.
- Coordinate internal and external legal support for Citi’s businesses in Tanzania, ensuring cost-effective legal service delivery.
- Develop a strong understanding of Citi’s operations and key legal and regulatory risks in Tanzania.
- Collaborate with internal stakeholders, business units, control functions, and external counsel to achieve efficient and coordinated outcomes.
- Partner with Country leadership to maintain strong relationships with local regulators and relevant authorities.
- Monitor legal and regulatory developments affecting Citi and communicate key updates to management.
- Participate in governance committees (e.g., risk & control, compliance, legal committees) and provide legal input.
- Manage day-to-day legal activities and serve as a subject matter expert, offering senior advisory support.
- Assess risks in business decisions, ensuring compliance with laws, regulations, and internal policies while safeguarding Citi’s reputation and assets.
- Promote ethical conduct, transparency, and accountability in all legal and business practices.
- Support the Country General Counsel on company secretarial matters as assigned.
Qualifications & Experience
- Minimum 7+ years of experience in corporate and investment banking legal practice.
- Qualified and admitted attorney.
- Proven experience handling complex legal matters in a fast-paced environment.
