Job Summary

The Head of Debt is responsible for leading and managing the Corporate Banking debt asset product portfolio at Absa Bank Tanzania.

This role focuses on:

  • Driving sustainable growth of the debt franchise
  • Implementing risk-adjusted pricing (RORWA)
  • Ensuring disciplined balance sheet management
  • Deepening client relationships

The position is critical in positioning Absa as a leading corporate bank in Tanzania.


Key Responsibilities

1. Business Management (75%)

  • Own and deliver Debt Balance Sheet and P&L targets in collaboration with Relationship Managers and product teams
  • Develop and execute strategy across coverage segments (products, customer proposition, lending approach)
  • Support Relationship Managers in originating and executing debt transactions
  • Originate and execute Debt and Investment Banking opportunities
  • Collaborate with specialist product teams to deliver comprehensive client solutions
  • Implement and enforce Debt Pricing Policy
  • Lead new product approval processes for Debt products at country level
  • Ensure compliance with governance and regulatory requirements
  • Maintain up-to-date Debt pipeline (Salesforce)
  • Conduct monthly product revenue validation
  • Ensure pricing meets minimum hurdle rates
  • Monitor portfolio performance and maintain strong credit quality
  • Identify opportunities and implement best practices across segments
  • Ensure Mini ALCO meetings are held and deals are realized on the balance sheet

2. People Development & Management (25%)

  • Build and enhance Debt product knowledge among Relationship Managers
  • Strengthen in-country capabilities
  • Foster collaboration with key stakeholders (Credit, CCMs, and group partners)
  • Ensure adherence to Absa policies and procedures
  • Embed strong values, behaviours, and risk culture
  • Provide learning and development opportunities for teams

Risk & Control Responsibilities

  • Apply risk frameworks and promote a strong risk culture
  • Understand role in end-to-end processes, including risks and controls
  • Adhere to all policies and procedures
  • Report and analyze risk events and incidents
  • Identify and implement improvements in control environments
  • Complete all mandatory training within required timelines

Preferred:

  • Experience in a multinational and matrix environment
  • Exposure to banking and financial services industry at a senior level
  • Experience in international financial institutions

Education Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Business, Commerce, Management, or related field (Required)
  • Relevant professional qualifications are an added advantage
