Job Purpose
The Control Room Operator – Boiler & Bagasse is responsible for monitoring and controlling boiler operations through the Distributed Control System (DCS) to ensure all operational and safety parameters are maintained within required limits, guaranteeing efficient steam generation and plant performance.
Key Responsibilities
- Maintain boiler operating parameters within specified limits to ensure efficiency and longevity
- Ensure boilers operate at 45 bars pressure to support steam and power generation
- Monitor and control:
- Steam pressure and flow
- Water quality
- Boiler performance indicators
- Monitor environmental emissions and understand impacts of safety valve releases and flue gas output
- Perform pre-start inspections, daily Mobrey checks, and transmitter checks as per SOPs
- Respond promptly to alarms and communicate abnormalities to relevant personnel
- Support boiler maintenance during breakdowns and off-crop periods
- Collaborate with maintenance and operations teams (electrical, instrumentation, CBM, planners)
- Ensure all equipment (mechanical, electrical, instrumentation, interlocks) is functional
- Adhere strictly to Illovo safety standards and company procedures
Minimum Requirements
- Diploma in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering (Bachelor’s degree is an added advantage)
- Minimum 3 years’ experience in a production or factory environment
- Experience working with water tube boilers (≥20 bars pressure)
- Experience in a sugar processing plant is highly preferred
Key Skills & Competencies
- Strong understanding of boiler operations and control systems (DCS)
- Ability to monitor and interpret technical parameters
- Good problem-solving and troubleshooting skills
- Strong communication and teamwork abilities
- High attention to safety and operational standards
- Ability to work under pressure and respond to emergencies
