Job Purpose

The Agronomist will ensure consistent production of barley and sorghum to meet business requirements by working closely with farmers, promoting best agronomic practices, and monitoring crop performance.

Key Responsibilities

1. Farmer Engagement & Coordination

Mobilize, recruit, and register farmers for barley and sorghum production.
Coach farmers to manage farming as a business.
Promote adoption of modern farming technologies and machinery.

2. Crop Production & Management

Ensure proper execution of:
- Land preparation
- Planting
- Weeding
- Harvesting
Monitor crops throughout the growth cycle.
Ensure use of certified seeds supplied by the company at correct rates.

3. Agronomic Best Practices

Promote soil and moisture conservation techniques.
Ensure proper crop rotation practices.
Oversee correct application of:
- Herbicides
- Fungicides
- Insecticides

4. Advisory & Technical Support

Identify crop abnormalities (diseases, pests, infestations).
Provide timely recommendations and corrective measures to farmers.
Disseminate new agricultural technologies and innovations.

5. Input & Resource Management

Determine acreage and input requirements.
Assist in recovery of input costs advanced to farmers.

6. Data Management & Reporting

Maintain a database tracking:
- Seed distribution
- Seed uptake
- Planted acreage
- Crop yield
Submit timely monthly sustainability and operational reports.

Minimum Requirements

Bachelor of Science (Hons) in Agronomy or related field.
Minimum of 2 years’ experience in agronomy or related environment.
Experience working with:
- Commercial farmers
- Smallholder farmers
Experience in managing agronomic operations.
Fluency in English.
Valid driver’s license.
