Obstetrician Gynaecologist

Main Purpose of the Role

To provide specialist obstetric and gynecological care before, during, and after pregnancy, ensuring:

  • Improved maternal and reproductive health
  • Reduced risks during pregnancy and delivery
  • Safe obstetric surgical interventions

The role works in close collaboration with doctors, midwives, and nursing teams.


Key Responsibilities

1. Clinical Care & Emergency Obstetrics

  • Provide diagnosis, treatment, and care in obstetrics and gynecology
  • Manage complicated pregnancies and deliveries
  • Lead surgical obstetric care, including emergencies and complex cases
  • Participate in 24/7 emergency on-call coverage
  • Perform Caesarean sections and obstetric procedures
  • Implement MSF and Ministry of Health clinical protocols
  • Ensure safe labor management practices (including partograph use)

2. Clinical Quality Improvement

  • Conduct C-section audits (indications, outcomes, avoidability)
  • Monitor infection prevention and surgical safety standards
  • Lead maternal death and near-miss reviews
  • Identify system gaps and preventable risks
  • Ensure safe antibiotic use and rational drug prescription
  • Improve operating theatre standards with surgical teams
  • Ensure timely incident reporting (within 72 hours)

3. Telemedicine & Coordination

  • Support 24/7 telemedicine referral system
  • Coordinate between district, primary, and tertiary facilities
  • Ensure timely specialist consultation for complex cases

4. Team Leadership & Capacity Building

  • Train and mentor:
    • Medical officers
    • Clinical officers
    • Midwives
  • Conduct bedside teaching and case reviews
  • Deliver emergency obstetric training (e.g. shoulder dystocia, breech delivery)
  • Strengthen clinical decision-making capacity

5. Monitoring, Data & Reporting

  • Maintain accurate maternity and surgical records
  • Track key indicators:
    • Maternal mortality rate
    • Caesarean section rate
    • Post-operative infection rate
  • Ensure proper documentation of surgical checklists
  • Promote complete and accurate clinical record-keeping

6. Resource & Equipment Management

  • Supervise use and maintenance of obstetric equipment
  • Ensure proper drug stock management
  • Coordinate with pharmacy and logistics teams

Minimum Requirements

Education

  • Master’s degree in Gynecology/Obstetrics from a recognized institution

Experience

  • Minimum 3 years’ clinical experience in Obstetrics & Gynecology
  • Experience in NGOs or developing countries is an advantage

Skills

  • Computer literacy (MS Word, Excel)
  • Strong clinical and surgical skills
  • Ability to work in resource-limited settings

Languages

  • English (required)
  • Kiswahili (required)

Salary & Benefits

  • Basic salary: TZS 4,250,000 per month (non-negotiable)
  • 2% salary increment after 12 months
  • Additional 2% increment every following 12 months
  • Additional benefits discussed during interview
