MSF Job Vacancy Summary

Position: Paediatrician (Neonate)

Location: Liwale, Lindi (Tanzania)
Organisation: Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF)
Salary: 4,250,000 TZS/month (non-negotiable)

Core Purpose of the Role

Provide specialised neonatal and paediatric care (outpatient and inpatient) using MSF protocols to improve survival and health outcomes for newborns and children.


Key Responsibilities

Clinical Care

  • Diagnose and treat neonatal conditions such as:
    • Prematurity, neonatal sepsis, birth asphyxia
    • Respiratory distress, hypothermia, jaundice
  • Manage malnutrition and paediatric emergencies
  • Perform neonatal procedures including:
    • Neonatal resuscitation
    • CPAP management
    • IV access and fluid management
    • Antibiotic treatment
    • Feeding support (NG feeding, breastfeeding support)

Hospital and Systems Support

  • Ensure compliance with MSF clinical protocols
  • Collaborate with maternity and paediatric departments
  • Monitor equipment (incubators, oxygen systems, CPAP, phototherapy machines)
  • Support infection prevention and hygiene standards
  • Manage admission, discharge, transfer, and referral systems

Training and Leadership

  • Train doctors, nurses, clinical officers, and midwives
  • Conduct training on neonatal care, resuscitation, KMC, and infection prevention
  • Supervise staff performance and shift organisation

Monitoring and Quality Improvement

  • Review mortality and morbidity cases
  • Analyse neonatal and paediatric data for quality improvement
  • Improve documentation and patient safety systems

Coordination

  • Coordinate referrals with Ministry of Health and MSF teams
  • Support telemedicine consultations for critical cases

Minimum Requirements

Education

  • Master’s degree in Paediatrics (Specialist level required)

Experience

  • At least 3 years certified neonatal hospital experience
  • Must be focused on neonatal care (not general paediatrics)
  • MSF or NGO experience in low-resource settings is an advantage

Skills

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel
  • Strong clinical and leadership skills

Languages

  • English (required)
  • Swahili (required)

Mandatory License

  • Valid Medical Council of Tanganyika (MCT) registration or practicing license
  • Missing this leads to automatic disqualification
