About the Role
The Nature Conservancy is seeking a Science Program Intern to support terrestrial and inland water conservation activities within the Lake Tanganyika Basin.
The internship focuses on improving biodiversity conservation in the Malagarasi–Muyovosi landscape through:
- Biodiversity monitoring
- Participatory mapping
- Restoration planning
- Regenerative agriculture support
- Community engagement
The intern will work closely with:
- Lake Tanganyika Basin Water Board
- Tanzania Youth Environmental Network (TAYEN)
- BLISS
- Local communities and conservation partners
Core Internship Objectives
The internship aims to:
- Strengthen biodiversity monitoring and data management systems
- Support restoration and tree-planting planning in degraded landscapes
- Promote regenerative agriculture approaches that improve livelihoods and ecosystem resilience
- Produce science-based spatial products and monitoring tools for adaptive management
Key Responsibilities
A. Data Management & Biodiversity Monitoring
- Coordinate structured acoustic biodiversity monitoring in Ntakata Forest
- Manage recordings, metadata, file organization, and secure data storage
- Compile and organize acoustic monitoring outputs bi-weekly
- Support SMART patrol operations, troubleshooting, and standardized data entry
- Prepare monthly SMART data summaries and reports
- Maintain monitoring submission logs and dataset audit trails
B. Participatory Mapping & Restoration Planning
- Coordinate participatory mapping exercises for restoration planning in the Malagarasi landscape
- Identify and classify restoration and tree-planting zones using GIS and spatial analysis
- Facilitate mapping sessions with communities and local stakeholders
- Integrate local knowledge into restoration planning
- Produce digital and print-ready GIS maps and restoration planning products
C. Regenerative Agriculture & Community Engagement
- Support planning and implementation of regenerative agriculture pilot activities
- Assist with:
- Agroforestry
- Contour planting
- Cover cropping
- Mulching
- Composting
- Erosion control initiatives
- Facilitate farmer and community engagement sessions
- Support training activities and farmer field schools
- Document socioeconomic and gender-related participation considerations
- Help develop monitoring indicators and baseline data collection systems
Minimum Qualifications
Applicants must have:
- Bachelor’s Degree with at least 6 months of related experience
- Background in:
- Natural Sciences
- Environmental Studies
- Conservation
- Or related field
- Fluency in English and Kiswahili
- Strong Microsoft Office skills (Excel, Word, PowerPoint)
- Strong data management and analytical skills
- Willingness to travel and work in remote locations
- Enrollment or affiliation with a recognized higher learning institution
- Minimum age of 18 years

Desired Qualifications
- Knowledge or experience in conservation and ecosystem management
- Familiarity with GIS, biodiversity monitoring, or community conservation work

This role requires:
- A valid driver’s license
- Compliance with TNC’s Auto Safety Program
- Successful completion of vehicle use requirements where applicable
