Job Summary

The SME Relationship Manager will manage and grow relationships with:

  • SME customers
  • Business Banking clients
  • Connected Personal Banking customers

The role acts as a primary customer contact and supports Relationship Management through:

  • Product knowledge
  • Sales support
  • Financial analysis
  • Customer relationship development
  • Risk management
  • Business development activities

The role also requires compliance with:

  • Anti-money laundering policies
  • Financial sanctions policies
  • Reputational risk policies
  • Other Absa regulatory requirements

Main Responsibilities

Sales & Customer Service (70%)

Customer Relationship Management

  • Build and maintain strong customer relationships
  • Develop contacts within client organizations
  • Support Customer Relationship Plans
  • Monitor customer satisfaction levels
  • Coordinate referrals within the Absa Group

Business Development

  • Identify and research potential customers
  • Maintain customer prospect databases
  • Conduct product presentations
  • Build relationships with local business communities
  • Coordinate portfolio-related information

Collaboration

  • Work with specialists across:
    • Business Banking
    • Corporate Banking
    • Other Absa departments
  • Support Relationship Managers with market intelligence and customer solutions

Business Management (30%)

Financial & Risk Support

  • Analyze historic and projected financial information
  • Monitor covenant compliance
  • Assist with Credit Applications
  • Prepare facility letters
  • Coordinate documentation and facility drawdowns

Administrative & Operational Support

  • Coordinate product setup
  • Support security documentation processes
  • Assist with risk reporting and reviews
  • Attend and contribute to Relationship Team meetings
  • Support interdepartmental coordination and administrative tasks

Risk & Compliance Responsibilities

The role holder must:

  • Understand and manage operational risks
  • Adhere to Absa policies and procedures
  • Stay updated on regulatory and industry changes
  • Support crisis coordination when required
  • Complete mandatory compliance training
  • Promote a strong risk and control culture

Qualifications & Experience

Education

Required:

  • Higher Diploma or Degree in:
    • Business
    • Commerce
    • Management Studies

Added advantage:

  • Diploma or Degree in Sales or Marketing
  • A.C.I.B. qualification or examinations

Experience

  • Minimum 2 years banking experience
  • Preferably 3 years in a similar role
  • Experience in:
    • SME Banking
    • Relationship management
    • Lending and financial analysis
    • Customer service and sales

Technical Skills & Competencies
