Position Overview

The Barrick Africa Middle East Team at North Mara Mine is seeking to recruit a Maintenance Supervisor – Mobile Crane to join its Engineering Services team.

This is a permanent, site-based role responsible for establishing and leading the Mobile Crane Maintenance section under a new two-foreman structure.

The successful candidate will build, lead, and develop a maintenance crew from the ground up, creating a safe and reliable mobile crane maintenance capability supporting both open-pit mining operations and Engineering Services functions across the site.

The position reports to the Foreman – Engineering Services (Group 1: Mobile & Fleet) under the Engineering Services Superintendent.

Key Responsibilities

Safety, Compliance and Leadership

  • Ensure compliance with:
    • Barrick health, safety, and environmental policies.
    • Mines Health & Safety Act.
    • Applicable Tanzanian legislation.

  • Conduct safety briefings, toolbox talks, risk assessments, and permit-to-work compliance activities.
  • Investigate incidents and near misses and implement corrective actions.

Team Management and Development

  • Lead, coach, develop, and manage a multidisciplinary team of:
    • Mechanical technicians.
    • Electrical technicians.
  • Establish the Mobile Crane Maintenance section and build team capability.
  • Develop employees through skills transfer and structured coaching.
  • Reduce dependence on external technical support by developing local expertise.

Mobile Crane Maintenance Management

  • Develop and implement preventive and predictive maintenance schedules for:
    • Telescopic boom cranes.
    • Lattice boom cranes.
  • Maximize equipment availability and reliability.
  • Plan and supervise:
    • Corrective maintenance.
    • Repairs.
    • Overhauls.
    • Component replacements.
  • Coordinate breakdown response activities.
  • Conduct Root Cause Failure Analysis (RCFA) to prevent repeat failures.

Technical Support and Equipment Reliability

  • Provide technical leadership on complex mobile crane issues involving:
    • Mechanical systems.
    • Hydraulic systems.
    • Electrical systems.
    • Structural components.
  • Diagnose failures and implement cost-effective repair solutions.
  • Conduct inspections to ensure:
    • Operational readiness.
    • Structural integrity.
    • Compliance with manufacturer specifications.
    • Compliance with lifting standards.

Safety Systems and Certification

  • Ensure proper:
    • Calibration.
    • Function testing.
    • Certification of Load Moment Indicators (LMI).
    • Testing of safety devices and control systems.
  • Maintain load testing documentation and certification records.
  • Ensure compliance with crane safety requirements.

Quality Control and Reporting

  • Enforce quality standards across maintenance activities.
  • Review and approve:
    • Repair methods.
    • Work procedures.
    • Workmanship standards.
  • Maintain accurate:
    • Maintenance records.
    • Service histories.
    • Equipment files in SAP (CMMS).
  • Prepare daily, weekly, and monthly technical performance reports.

Spare Parts and Workshop Management

  • Manage mobile crane spare parts inventory.
  • Coordinate with Supply Chain and Procurement teams for:
    • Critical spares.
    • Insurance spares.
    • Materials.
  • Maintain workshop facilities, tools, and specialized crane equipment.
  • Ensure proper housekeeping and safe storage of hazardous materials.

External Support and Supplier Coordination

  • Liaise with:
    • OEM representatives.
    • Specialist service providers.
  • Coordinate:
    • Technical support.
    • Warranty claims.
    • Equipment upgrades.
    • Specialized services.
  • Ensure quality and cost control.

Qualification Requirements

Applicants must have:

  • Technician Certificate (FTC) in:
    • Mechanical Engineering.
    • Electrical Engineering.
    • Related trade.

OR

  • Diploma in:
    • Heavy Equipment Technology.
    • Automotive Engineering.

With extensive relevant experience.

Additional requirements:

  • Mobile crane maintenance certification or equivalent OEM technical training.
  • Proven ability to coach, train, and develop technical teams.
  • Experience using Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS), preferably SAP.
  • Valid Tanzanian Light Vehicle driving licence.
  • Knowledge of:
    • Tanzanian Mines Health & Safety Act.
    • Mining regulations.
    • Lifting legislation.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain:
    • Light Vehicle permit.
    • Move and Test permit for company equipment.

Experience and Competencies Required

Candidates should have:

  • 7–10 years’ hands-on experience in heavy equipment maintenance, with strong experience in mobile cranes:
    • Telescopic boom cranes.
    • Lattice boom cranes.
  • Minimum 5 years’ supervisory or leading hand experience managing technical teams in mining or heavy industrial environments.
  • Expert knowledge of:
    • Hydraulic systems.
    • Electrical systems.
    • Mechanical systems.
    • Structural crane systems.
  • Experience with major crane OEMs, including:
    • Liebherr.
    • Terex.
    • Grove.
    • Manitowoc.
    • Tadano.
    • Equivalent brands.
  • Strong understanding of:
    • Load charts.
    • Capacity calculations.
    • Structural integrity assessments.
    • Load testing procedures.
    • LMI calibration.
    • Safety device certification.
  • Ability to interpret:
    • Technical drawings.
    • Hydraulic schematics.
    • Electrical schematics.
    • OEM service manuals.
  • Experience establishing maintenance systems and developing teams.
  • Good knowledge of SAP PM or equivalent CMMS.

About North Mara Gold Mine

North Mara Gold Mine is located in north-west Tanzania in Tarime District, Mara Region, approximately:

  • 100 km east of Lake Victoria.
  • 20 km south of the Kenyan border.

The mine began commercial production in 2002 and operates as a combined:

  • Open-pit mining operation at Nyabirama.
  • Underground mining operation at Gokona.
