Job Summary

Reporting to the Country Money Laundering Reporting Officer (MLRO), the Financial Crime Advisory & Governance Manager is responsible for supporting the delivery and governance of Financial Crime Compliance programmes across the bank.

The role focuses on ensuring compliance with Anti-Money Laundering (AML), Know Your Customer (KYC), sanctions, Anti-Bribery and Corruption (ABC), and other financial crime regulations while strengthening governance frameworks, policies, systems, and controls.

The successful candidate will work closely with business units, regulators, auditors, and internal stakeholders to enhance Absa’s financial crime risk management framework.


Key Responsibilities

1. Financial Crime Governance & Advisory (60%)

The successful candidate will:

  • Support the Country MLRO in implementing Financial Crime Compliance programmes.
  • Understand and apply KYC, AML, sanctions, Anti-Bribery & Corruption (ABC), and financial crime policies.
  • Support enhancements to core banking systems and customer onboarding platforms related to Financial Crime Compliance.
  • Monitor project timelines, milestones, and resource utilisation.
  • Challenge and monitor financial crime risk management across business units.
  • Ensure compliance with all financial crime regulatory requirements.
  • Monitor, review, update, and enforce Financial Crime policies and procedures.
  • Ensure remediation of High-Risk Customer, Politically Exposed Person (PEP), and other Financial Crime compliance issues.
  • Support implementation of Financial Crime projects and Risk Management & Compliance Programmes (RMCP).
  • Coordinate with Internal Audit, Operational Risk, FCAT, the Central Bank, and regulators during reviews and assurance activities.
  • Develop and monitor action plans arising from Financial Crime reviews and audits.

Functional Management

Additional responsibilities include:

  • Identify weaknesses within current Financial Crime procedures and recommend improvements.
  • Analyse management information (MI) to identify trends and monitor control effectiveness.
  • Advise business units on Financial Crime periodic review timelines.
  • Support resolution of findings raised by Internal Audit and external regulators.
  • Enhance systems such as:
    • KAMLS.
    • Customer onboarding systems.
  • Champion implementation of automated Financial Crime monitoring triggers.
  • Support implementation of the Risk-Based Approach (RBA) across the bank.
  • Guide business units on AML customer profiling.
  • Review and update Financial Crime policies, procedures, and governance documentation.
  • Establish governance frameworks and committees.
  • Ensure policies comply with applicable laws, regulations, and internal standards.
  • Serve as the Financial Crime contact point for NAPA-related matters.
  • Assess Financial Crime risks associated with new products, services, and business initiatives.
  • Maintain version control and document management for Financial Crime policies.
  • Monitor remediation activities to ensure timely closure.

2. Financial Crime Training (20%)

The role holder will:

  • Deliver Financial Crime training programmes across the organisation.
  • Conduct training on:
    • AML.
    • KYC.
    • Sanctions.
    • Anti-Bribery & Corruption.
    • Regulatory updates.
  • Build organisational understanding of Financial Crime methodologies and compliance processes.
  • Develop training frameworks and assessments.
  • Ensure all employees complete annual Financial Crime training, including targeted training where required.

3. Controls Oversight (20%)

Responsibilities include:

  • Promote a strong Financial Crime risk management culture across business units.
  • Maintain customer refresh schedules.
  • Ensure periodic KYC, Customer Due Diligence (CDD), and Enhanced Due Diligence (EDD) reviews are completed.
  • Establish appropriate customer refresh triggers.
  • Ensure business processes align with the bank’s risk appetite and governance standards.

Knowledge & Experience

  • Minimum 4 years of practical experience within the financial services industry in areas such as:
    • Operational Risk Management.

    • Project Management.

Additional requirements include:

  • Good understanding of Absa governance processes.
  • Knowledge of Absa policies and internal standards.
  • Strong understanding of technology supporting:
    • Customer onboarding.
    • Ongoing customer monitoring.
    • Customer review processes.
  • Ability to challenge existing processes and drive behavioural change.
  • Experience working in a multinational, matrix-reporting environment.
