In partnership with TradeMark Africa, Lattice Aquaculture, and MicroSave Consulting, Kilimo Trust is implementing the WYEEFIMA Programme, a five-year initiative funded by the Mastercard Foundation.

The programme focuses on improving employment and entrepreneurship opportunities for women and youth in the fish and seaweed value chains through inclusive market access.


Assignment Overview

Kilimo Trust is seeking an Experiential Trainer to provide practical, hands-on training to WYEEFIMA participants, mainly women and youth aged 18–35 years.

The trainer will operate from either:

  • A non-formal training centre; or
  • A fisheries association with suitable facilities and equipment.

The training will focus on improving participants’ skills in:

  • Hygienic fish and seaweed handling.
  • Fish and seaweed value addition.
  • Storage techniques.
  • Packaging methods.
  • Post-harvest practices.

The objective is to improve product quality, marketability, and income opportunities within fisheries value chains.


Scope of Work

The selected trainer will provide practical training in one or more of the following areas:

1. Hygienic Handling and Value Addition

Training on:

  • Proper fish handling practices.
  • Maintaining product quality.
  • Value addition techniques for market readiness.

2. Fish Preservation Technologies

Training participants on preservation methods including:

  • Chilled and frozen fish products.
  • Sun-dried fish.
  • Salted fish products.
  • Smoked fish products.
  • Deep-fried fish products.
  • Other appropriate preservation methods.

3. Seaweed Value Addition (Zanzibar)

Specific training areas:

  • Seaweed processing.
  • Innovative seaweed products.
  • Market-oriented seaweed value addition.

4. Packaging, Labelling and Storage (Zanzibar)

Training on:

  • Appropriate packaging methods.
  • Product labelling.
  • Storage practices.
  • Packaging requirements based on different value-added products.

Training Targets

The consultant will be required to:

  • Train between 20 and 40 participants within four days.
  • Train a minimum of 80 WYEEFIMA participants within 40 days.
  • Provide practical, experience-based learning sessions.

Consultant Deliverables

The selected trainer must:

  1. Deliver practical training sessions on:
    • Post-harvest practices.
    • Fish and seaweed value addition.
  2. Submit a professionally prepared final training report covering:
  • Training activities conducted.
  • Number of participants trained.
  • Training outcomes.
  • Challenges encountered.
  • Recommendations.

Training Locations

Applicants should indicate their preferred training location.

Training will be conducted in:

Mwanza Region

Districts:

  • Nyamagana.
  • Ilemela.
  • Ukerewe.
  • Magu.

Zanzibar

  • Unguja.

Qualifications and Experience

Applicants must have:

  • Extensive community-level training experience.
  • Minimum 3 years of practical experience in:
    • Hygienic fish handling.
    • Fish value addition.
    • Fish product trading.
    • Post-harvest fisheries practices.
  • Ability to deliver training in:
    • Kiswahili and/or English.

Added advantage:

  • Relevant certifications.
  • Formal trainer qualifications.
  • Training from:
    • Dar es Salaam Institute of Technology (DIT).
    • Vocational training institutions.
    • Other recognized training institutions.
