JOB VACANCY: DCS OPERATOR

JOB PURPOSE

The DCS Operator will be responsible for effectively operating and monitoring all milling plant units through the Distributed Control System (DCS) and conducting routine field checks.

The position aims to ensure optimal process performance, maximum mill extraction, and uninterrupted operations.

KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The successful candidate will be responsible for:

• Performing mill pre-start checks on the DCS together with the Mill Attendant at the site, including all mill drive units, inter-carriers, and inclined carriers.
• Communicating with the Front End Foreman before starting the mill.
• Performing on-run checks with the Mill Attendant to identify leakages, blockages, abnormal sounds, or unusual operations.
• Controlling mill parameters to achieve maximum mill extraction.
• Monitoring mechanical and electrical parameters during mill operations, including oil flow and current for mills, conveyors, carriers, and inter-carriers.
• Ensuring the Cane Table Operator maintains appropriate feeding.
• Achieving daily mill KPIs as updated on a weekly basis.
• Ensuring the risk of DCS override is eliminated before any repair or corrective work is carried out during operation.
• Assisting the maintenance team before fixing mill abnormalities or faults.
• Communicating with the Front End Foreman, Mill Attendant, or relevant personnel during emergencies.
• Working with other mill staff to resolve breakdowns and carry out maintenance at the station.
• Taking reasonable care of your own health and safety and that of other persons who may be affected by your actions or omissions.
• Recording operational parameters in the relevant registers.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

Applicants should have:

• Certificate in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering, or Trade Test II in Fitter Mechanics.
• Diploma in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering will be an added advantage.
• At least 2 years of experience in mill operations.
• Basic training in industrial safety.
• Ability to identify hazards and assess associated risks in mill operations.
• Good computer skills.
