Mbeya Cement Company Limited (MCCL) is a premier Tanzanian building materials manufacturer established in 1973 by the Government of Tanzania, with its integrated production facility starting operations in 1983 in the Songwe Industrial Area. Located in southwestern Tanzania, the company primarily produces clinker, aggregates, and high-quality cement marketed under its popular Tembo brand. Over its multi-decade evolution, the enterprise transitioned through strategic private ownerships—including acquisitions by the Commonwealth Development Corporation (CDC) in 1999 and global building material leader LafargeHolcim in 2001—which introduced substantial operational modernizations, such as advanced vertical mill technology.
Currently, MCCL operates as a major subsidiary of the Tanzanian conglomerate Amsons Group, which acquired a controlling 65% stake from Holcim, alongside equity retained by the Government of Tanzania and the National Social Security Fund (NSSF). Equipped with ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 certifications, Mbeya Cement produces several hundred thousand tonnes annually to meet diverse structural needs across East Africa. Thanks to its strategic location in the Southern Highlands, the company serves as a vital supplier for domestic construction projects throughout Tanzania while actively exporting to neighboring regional markets including Zambia, Malawi, Burundi, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
