Key Purpose

The Packaging Operator will be responsible for safely operating and maintaining defined packaging equipment and related processes to achieve optimal equipment and process effectiveness.

Key Responsibilities

1. Equipment Operation and Packaging Processes

• Maintain a safe and healthy working environment.
• Interpret and implement the production plan for the assigned shift.
• Operate manual and automatic machines according to established standards.
• Monitor production processes and correct negative trends.
• Ensure production quality and productivity.
• Operate packaging equipment in accordance with VPO standards.
• Review process performance against targets.
• Record short stops and correct out-of-control conditions using VPO tools.
• Record waste and product movements using the appropriate documentation or information systems.
• Review trends to identify and resolve problems.

2. Administration

• Complete required tracking and monitoring activities.
• Complete operator workstation administration and take appropriate action.
• Complete Team Room administration as required.
• Contribute to personal and professional development.

3. Problem Solving

• Manage PIMS and POMS and take corrective action on negative trends.
• Use QFRs when required.
• Complete 5 WHY analyses with relevant team members when triggered.
• Contribute to AB reports as required.
• Use VPO problem-solving tools to resolve and document operational issues.

4. Plant and Equipment Maintenance

• Perform autonomous operations as defined for the relevant process areas.
• Identify defective equipment and report it to the Process Artisan or Team Leader.
• Assist Process Artisans or Machine Specialists with running repairs during shifts.

5. Quality Control and Analysis

• Conduct required quality checks and analyses.
• Record quality results in the appropriate information system.
• Follow the quality checks specified in the relevant work instructions.
• Respond to quality results using the available VPO tools.

6. Communication

• Participate actively in shift meetings.
• Ask questions and contribute suggestions.
• Use action logs to record issues, problems, and improvement opportunities.
• Understand the team’s goals and contribute towards achieving them.
• Use communication tools such as the shift logbook to stay informed and communicate issues.
• Provide a proper handover to incoming shift teams, particularly regarding plant performance, quality, and maintenance issues.

7. Autonomous Operations

• Conduct autonomous operations as required for the assigned process area.

Minimum Requirements

Applicants should have:

• Bachelor’s degree or Diploma in Engineering.
• Mechanical aptitude.
• Machine-specific experience.
• Technical qualification such as N3 or equivalent.
• Experience in the packaging FMCG industry.
• Post-Matric qualification or equivalent, such as:
  • N4 National Diploma or equivalent
  • External IOB Certificate/Diploma
  • Mechanical or Electrical qualification
• Ability to work shifts.
