Job Purpose
The Brewing Operator is responsible for operating the manual brewing plant and processes not associated with PLC control. The role also involves carrying out maintenance and asset-care activities in support of the Brewing Technician Artisan and assisting the Brewing Technician Operator with quality-control checks.
Key Responsibilities
1. Shift-Based Production Performance
- Operate designated plant and equipment.
- Monitor brewing processes during the shift.
- Ensure process quality and productivity.
- Maintain a safe and healthy working environment.
- Coordinate autonomous maintenance and cleaning activities.
2. Shift Team Performance
- Communicate effectively with colleagues and other team members.
- Support the team in achieving production and operational goals.
3. Administration
- Follow required administrative systems and procedures.
- Contribute to personal and team development.
4. Operating and Process Control
- Operate manual brewing equipment according to work instructions.
- Support the plant control system under the direction of the Brewing Team Leader.
- Monitor process performance against targets and record short stops.
- Initiate corrective action when performance falls below target or problems are identified.
- Record waste and product movement using the appropriate systems.
- Review waste trends to identify problems and improvement opportunities.
- Conduct required quality checks and analyses.
- Respond quickly to upstream or downstream conditions that could affect production or quality.
- Apply appropriate problem-solving procedures.
- Perform housekeeping duties using 4S principles and safe work practices.
- Identify and correct unsafe working practices.
- Assist fellow team members with their tasks.
5. Maintenance of Plant and Equipment
- Carry out detailed cleaning, lubrication, and inspection of equipment according to work instructions and the autonomous maintenance schedule.
- Perform simple autonomous maintenance tasks, such as replacing simple valves.
- Request assistance from the Process Artisan when required.
- Identify defective equipment and report it to the Process Artisan or Team Leader for resolution.
6. Quality Control and Analysis
- Conduct required quality checks and analyses.
- Record quality results in the appropriate information system.
- Follow the quality checks specified in the relevant work instructions.
- Where quality problems occur, apply 5Y’s and quick-fix routines to resolve them.
7. Communication
- Participate actively in shift meetings.
- Ask questions, provide suggestions, and contribute to discussions.
- Use the gap list to record issues, problems, and improvement opportunities.
- Understand team goals and participate in goal-review sessions.
- Use communication tools such as the shift logbook to stay informed and communicate operational issues.
- Complete proper handovers to incoming team members, particularly regarding plant performance, quality, and maintenance.
8. Problem Solving
- Use 5Y’s and quick-fix routines to identify the possible causes of problems.
- Report identified issues to the Process Artisan and/or Team Leader for resolution.
- Provide information to teams conducting problem-solving activities or FFAs when required.
9. Continuous Improvement
- Identify sources of waste.
- Report waste sources and improvement opportunities to the Team Leader.
Minimum Requirements
Internal Applicants
- Level 4 Literacy
- Level 4 Numeracy
- Relevant prior AB InBev experience
- Mechanical aptitude
- Machine-specific experience
External Applicants
- Grade 12
- IBD Certificate
- Completed Brewing Learnership
- CAP/SKAP completed and assessed summatively within the past 12 months
- 2–5 years’ experience in a brewing environment
- Previous experience in a process-controlled manufacturing environment, preferably food/FMCG
- Mechanical aptitude
- PC literacy, particularly Microsoft and SAP
- Understanding of the brewing process value chain is preferred, from raw-material transfer through BBT, including E&F through to Packaging.
