BRAC began expanding its microfinance operations internationally in 2002 and currently operates in seven countries outside Bangladesh, including Tanzania, Uganda, Rwanda, Sierra Leone, Liberia, and Ghana. Collectively, these operations serve more than 800,000 clients, with women accounting for approximately 96% of clients.
About the Role
BRAC Tanzania Finance Limited is seeking an experienced Head of Operations to lead its field operations and drive sustainable business growth while maintaining portfolio quality, operational excellence, governance, and social impact.
Reporting directly to the Chief Executive Officer (CEO), the Head of Operations will oversee the field management structure, borrower acquisition, product expansion, portfolio performance, operational controls, and branch network performance.
The position is also part of the Executive Management Team, contributing to strategic decision-making, organisational performance, and stakeholder engagement.
Key Responsibilities
1. Strategic Leadership & Business Growth
- Lead the field management hierarchy and ensure effective execution of organisational strategy.
- Drive borrower acquisition, product rollout, market penetration, and portfolio expansion.
- Develop strategies for sustainable growth, client retention, and social impact.
- Contribute to business planning, financial projections, and operational strategies.
- Lead the development and implementation of the Annual Strategic Plan and operational targets.
2. Operations & Portfolio Management
- Ensure portfolio quality and operational efficiency.
- Strengthen field supervision and operational controls.
- Monitor branch and regional performance using KPIs, dashboards, and management information systems.
- Ensure corrective actions are implemented promptly when performance gaps are identified.
3. Risk Management, Governance & Compliance
- Manage operational and portfolio risks and strengthen fraud-prevention measures.
- Work with Risk, Compliance, Internal Audit, and Legal teams to strengthen governance.
- Ensure timely resolution of audit findings.
- Maintain effective internal controls throughout field operations.
- Ensure compliance with client-protection and responsible-finance standards.
4. Innovation & Customer Experience
- Work with the Head of Innovation & Customer Experience to implement new products, channels, and digital solutions.
- Integrate financial inclusion, women’s empowerment, responsible finance, and client well-being into operations.
- Collaborate with BRAC NGO and other partners on social-impact initiatives.
- Conduct field visits and engage with clients to assess service quality and satisfaction.
- Lead field adoption of digital transformation initiatives, including core banking, mobile banking, digital field applications, and management reporting systems.
5. People Leadership & Organisational Development
- Build high-performing leadership teams through coaching, mentoring, training, and succession planning.
- Promote accountability, collaboration, innovation, and performance excellence.
- Lead large and geographically dispersed teams.
- Oversee workforce planning and succession management for field leadership positions.
6. Stakeholder Engagement
- Develop relationships with regulators, investors, donors, development partners, and other stakeholders.
- Represent the organisation at industry forums, regulatory consultations, investor briefings, and other external engagements.
- Strengthen BRAC Tanzania Finance’s credibility and influence within the financial inclusion sector.
7. Safeguarding
The successful candidate will also be responsible for promoting a strong safeguarding culture by:
- Implementing safeguarding policies and the do-no-harm principle.
- Ensuring staff, partners, and service providers receive mandatory safeguarding training.
- Including safeguarding discussions in regular team meetings.
- Reporting safeguarding incidents through the appropriate organisational channels.
- Supporting investigations and treating victims/survivors with sensitivity and respect.
Academic Qualifications
Applicants must have:
- A Master’s degree in Business Administration, Finance, Economics, Banking, Management, or another relevant discipline.
Experience Requirements
Candidates should have:
- At least 10 years of progressive leadership experience in microfinance, retail banking, financial services, or financial inclusion.
- At least 5 years of experience managing large-scale field operations with direct accountability for growth and portfolio quality.
- A proven track record of scaling operations and delivering significant business growth.

The candidate should also have:
- Sound knowledge of regulatory frameworks governing microfinance and financial services.
- Experience engaging regulators, investors, donors, and strategic partners.
- Experience resolving audit findings and implementing corrective actions.
- Strong knowledge of financial planning, budgeting, forecasting, and operational cost management.
- Willingness and flexibility to travel internationally when required.
- Ability to work in distant locations when necessary.
- High ethical and moral standards.
