Job Overview
UNESCO is seeking a qualified Driver to provide safe, reliable and professional transportation services to UNESCO staff, officials, visitors and other authorized personnel in Dar es Salaam and during official field trips.
The successful candidate will also support vehicle maintenance, documentation, administrative tasks and other office duties when not engaged in driving.
Key Responsibilities
Driving & Transportation
- Drive UNESCO staff, officials, visitors and authorized personnel using official vehicles.
- Provide safe, reliable and timely transportation services.
- Meet officials and visitors at the airport.
- Assist with basic visa and customs formalities when required.
- Drive during official field trips.
- Determine appropriate routes and journey times while following security procedures.
- Work flexible, long or irregular hours when required, including weekends.
Vehicle Maintenance
- Maintain accurate daily vehicle logs.
- Arrange minor repairs and coordinate major repairs when necessary.
- Ensure timely oil changes.
- Regularly check tyres, brakes and water levels.
- Keep the vehicle clean and in good working condition.
- Support vehicle maintenance planning and reporting.
- Arrange vehicle inspections and repairs at designated workshops.
Vehicle Documentation & Safety
Ensure the vehicle has all required documents and supplies, including:
- Vehicle insurance
- Vehicle registration
- Vehicle logbooks
- City and country maps
- First-aid kit
- Necessary spare parts
- Office directory
The driver will also monitor insurance and tax formalities, report accidents accurately and assist with the use of communication equipment such as HF/VHF radios and satellite phones.
Administrative Support
When not driving, the incumbent may assist with:
- Delivering and collecting mail and documents.
- Photocopying and binding.
- Filing.
- Paying certain office bills.
- Covering duties of other drivers during leave.
- Other activities required to support the work team.
Required Qualifications
Education
- Minimum High School Certificate.
- Valid national driver’s licence.
- Passenger Service Vehicle driving training from a reputable institution is an advantage.
Work Experience
- Minimum 5 years of relevant work experience.
Language Requirements
- Fluency in English and Kiswahili, both written and spoken.
Skills & Competencies
Candidates should have:
- Proven ability to drive safely and comply with local traffic regulations.
- Strong communication skills.
- Experience driving different vehicle types and models.
- Ability to perform minor vehicle repairs.
- Knowledge of radio, email, telephone and related applications.
- Knowledge of United Nations vehicle rules and regulations is an added advantage.
- Good planning and organizational skills.
- Accountability and teamwork.
- Results-oriented approach.
- Ability to work safely under difficult traffic and driving conditions.
Contract Details
The initial Service Contract is for three months, from approximately 1 October to 31 December 2026.
The contract may be extended, subject to operational requirements, satisfactory performance and availability of funding. Extensions may be granted for periods of up to 12 months.
