Job Summary

NCBA is seeking a Business Development Officer – Broker Channel to drive profitable business growth through licensed insurance brokers.

The role focuses on acquiring and managing broker relationships, generating quality sales opportunities, increasing premium growth and retention, coordinating quotations and renewals, improving broker productivity, and ensuring excellent customer service and regulatory compliance.

Key Responsibilities

1. Broker Channel Sales & Growth – 40%

  • Achieve approved targets for:
    • Gross written premium.
    • Policy count.
    • Customer retention.
    • Channel profitability.
  • Build and maintain a qualified pipeline of licensed brokers.
  • Identify commercial, SME, and retail insurance opportunities through broker networks.
  • Improve quote-to-bind conversion.
  • Drive policy renewals and retention.
  • Cross-sell approved general insurance products.
  • Increase customers’ share of wallet.
  • Monitor broker portfolio performance, including:
    • Product mix.
    • Loss ratios.
    • Debtor trends.
    • Campaign returns.
  • Coordinate corrective actions where performance is below target.
  • Maintain accurate sales forecasts, CRM records, and monthly reports.

2. Partner Acquisition & Development – 30%

  • Identify and conduct due diligence on prospective licensed brokers.
  • Onboard approved brokers in accordance with intermediary-management requirements.
  • Develop structured broker relationship plans.
  • Create joint business plans and conduct portfolio reviews.
  • Maintain renewal calendars and follow up on service issues.
  • Train and brief brokers on:
    • Insurance products.
    • Underwriting appetite.
    • Sales processes.
    • Service standards.
    • Customer disclosures.
  • Maintain evidence of broker training.
  • Identify improvements in products, pricing, service delivery, and digital customer journeys.
  • Monitor broker productivity, retention, satisfaction, and share of wallet.
  • Follow up on agreed broker improvement actions.

3. Customer & Service Excellence – 15%

  • Coordinate quotations, policy placements, endorsements, renewals, cancellations, debit notes, credit notes, and documentation.
  • Ensure services are delivered within agreed service levels.
  • Act as the first escalation point for broker enquiries.
  • Coordinate with:
    • Underwriting
    • Operations
    • Finance
    • Claims
    • Customer Experience teams.
  • Monitor quotation and policy turnaround times.
  • Track broker enquiries and complaints.
  • Identify root causes and coordinate corrective actions.

4. Claims Support & Customer Education

  • Support brokers with correct claims-notification requirements.
  • Escalate urgent or material claims through approved channels.
  • Monitor claims-service feedback and recurring issues.
  • Provide accurate information on:
    • Product coverage.
    • Exclusions.
    • Policy limits.
    • Underwriting requirements.
    • Claims procedures.
  • Do not make claims-admissibility decisions outside delegated authority.

5. Risk, Governance & Compliance – 10%

  • Ensure business is conducted only through licensed and approved brokers.
  • Ensure broker relationships comply with agreements, product terms, policies, and intermediary requirements.
  • Support accurate customer disclosures and needs assessments.
  • Ensure proper documentation and premium-remittance follow-up.
  • Comply with data-protection requirements.
  • Escalate complaints and conduct risks promptly.
  • Maintain an audit-ready broker register containing:
    • Due-diligence records.
    • Licences.
    • Agreements.
    • Training records.
    • Business plans.
    • Activity reports.
  • Escalate underwriting, pricing, credit, premium, claims, compliance, and broker-conduct exceptions.

6. Learning & Development – 5%

  • Maintain a professional development plan covering:
    • General insurance products.
    • Broker relationship management.
    • Consultative selling.
    • Portfolio analytics.
    • Credit control.
    • Conduct risk.
    • Regulatory developments.
  • Complete mandatory training.
  • Share market intelligence and lessons learned with Distribution, Product, and Operations teams.

Academic Qualifications

Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree in:
    • Insurance,
    • Business,
    • Marketing,
    • Finance, or
    • Related discipline.

Mandatory Professional Qualification

A recognized professional insurance qualification is mandatory, such as:

  • CII / ACII
  • AIIK

Knowledge & Technical Skills

Candidates should have:

  • Strong knowledge of general insurance products.
  • Understanding of underwriting principles.
  • Knowledge of insurance broker distribution.
  • Understanding of policy administration.
  • Knowledge of claims processes.
  • Understanding of premium collection.
  • Knowledge of intermediary controls.
  • Proficiency in CRM systems.
  • Strong Microsoft Office skills.
  • Ability to use data-analysis and reporting tools.
  • Strong sales-pipeline and performance-management skills.

Work Experience

Candidates should have:

  • At least 5 years of relevant experience in insurance or financial services.
  • At least 3 years of experience in:
    • Business development,
    • Account management, or
    • Channel sales.
  • Demonstrated experience managing insurance brokers.
  • Proven ability to deliver measurable:
    • Premium growth.
    • Customer retention.
    • Portfolio profitability.
    • Share-of-wallet growth.
  • Experience using sales analytics and market intelligence to improve conversion, retention, partner productivity, and campaign performance.
  • Experience collaborating with Underwriting, Product, Claims, Operations, Marketing, Risk, Compliance, and external partners.

Ideal Candidate

The strongest candidate will be an experienced insurance business-development or broker-management professional with at least five years of industry experience and a mandatory professional insurance qualification.

The role particularly suits someone with a strong track record in broker acquisition, premium growth, policy retention, portfolio management, insurance sales, and partner relationship management, combined with strong knowledge of compliance and intermediary controls.
