Assistant Field Officer at Ifakara Health Institute, Morogoro & Pwani February 2026
The Ifakara Health Institute (IHI) is a premier Tanzanian health research organization and one of Africa’s most prominent scientific institutions. Originally founded in 1956 by the Swiss zoologist Dr. Rudolf Geigy as the Swiss Tropical Institute Field Laboratory, it has evolved from a small field station into a globally recognized independent non-profit trust led by Tanzanian scientists. The name “Ifakara,” which historically meant “a place you go to die” due to the high disease burden in the Kilombero Valley, now symbolizes a center of excellence dedicated to saving lives. Headquartered in Dar es Salaam, the institute maintains major research and training facilities in Ifakara and Bagamoyo, employing hundreds of specialists across disciplines such as entomology, molecular biology, and epidemiology.
The institute’s primary mission is to improve health and well-being through a robust mandate of research, training, and service delivery. While world-renowned for its pioneering work in malaria—contributing significantly to the development of insecticide-treated nets and various vaccine candidates—IHI also manages a diverse portfolio covering HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, maternal and newborn health, and emerging infectious diseases. Beyond basic science, the institute focuses on policy translation and “implementation science,” ensuring that laboratory discoveries are transformed into practical, evidence-based solutions for public health. By collaborating closely with the Tanzanian government and international partners, IHI continues to influence health policies both domestically and globally, striving toward a vision of an empowered population with access to quality healthcare.
