Job Summary
Northern Engineering Works Limited (NEWL) is seeking a competent and safety-focused Assistant Workshop & Fleet Officer to support the daily operation of the mechanical workshop and fleet. The role ensures efficient vehicle maintenance, cost control, compliance with health and safety standards, and uninterrupted project support.
Key Responsibilities
Workshop Operations
- Ensure staff, systems, and resources meet departmental service standards.
- Work closely with Operations Management to implement cost-effective workshop solutions.
- Achieve service and repair targets while ensuring vehicles are cleaned and maintained daily.
- Inspect and evaluate mechanical repairs to ensure compliance with manufacturer specifications.
- Oversee planned preventive maintenance to minimize breakdowns.
- Act as a technical resource, mentoring staff and conducting toolbox talks.
- Manage workshop housekeeping, equipment maintenance, and facility upkeep.
- Implement and maintain systems for stock control and quality assurance.
- Identify training needs and support the development of annual training plans.
Health, Safety & Compliance
- Promote safe working practices and report hazards and incidents promptly.
- Implement Health & Safety policies in line with legal and organizational standards.
- Manage fire safety responsibilities, including maintenance of a Fire Safety Plan.
- Ensure all tools, equipment, and substances are suitable and properly maintained.
- Conduct weekly inspections of workshop facilities.
Fleet Coordination
- Establish service reminder systems and maintain communication with vehicle users.
- Coordinate servicing schedules and spare-parts supply in collaboration with the Procurement Department.
Required Skills and Competencies
- Strong knowledge of petrol and diesel engine diagnostics, maintenance, and repair
- Ability to identify faults and implement preventive maintenance programs
- Fleet monitoring, vehicle tracking, and fuel management skills
- Spare-parts inventory and stock control experience
- Knowledge of transport regulations and occupational health and safety standards
- Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills
Minimum Qualifications
- Education: Bachelor’s Degree in Automotive Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Transport & Logistics Management, or a related field
- Experience: Minimum of 3–5 years in workshop operations or fleet management
- Licensing: Valid driver’s license (heavy-vehicle license is an added advantage)
- IT Skills: Basic computer literacy, including MS Office and fleet management systems
