Serengeti Communications and Fundraising Liaison

Position Title: Communications and Fundraising Liaison
Location: Serengeti Ecosystem (with travel to partner locations as needed)
Reports to: Programme Manager, Serengeti Ecosystem Conservation Programme (SECP), with technical support from FZS HQ Communications team
Start Date: 7th March 2026

Background

The Serengeti Ecosystem Conservation Programme (SECP) is committed to protecting one of the world’s most iconic ecosystems. Our work focuses on safeguarding biodiversity, engaging local communities in conservation, and ensuring sustainable tourism practices.

To strengthen our funding base and stakeholder engagement, we are seeking a Communications and Fundraising Liaison to engage nature-based tourism businesses in the Serengeti. This role will fundraise for SECP and support communication initiatives that promote FZS’s conservation work and community engagement.


Objectives of the Role

  • Build and manage relationships with nature-based tourism operators to generate sustainable funding for SECP.
  • Support communication efforts that promote conservation activities and community engagement.

Key Responsibilities

1. Communication Support for Conservation Efforts

  • Collaborate with the communications team to develop engaging materials (e.g., newsletters, social media content, website updates) that highlight conservation work and its impact.
  • Develop content that amplifies stories around community engagement in conservation.
  • Create tailored communications that spotlight community-focused work and its positive outcomes for conservation and local populations.
  • Act as a liaison between SECP and tourism businesses to ensure consistent messaging aligned with overall communication strategy.
  • Support other FZS programmes in Tanzania, as required.

2. Fundraising and Engagement with Tourism Operators

  • Develop and implement strategies to engage local and international tourism operators in fundraising activities for SECP.
  • Establish partnerships with tourism operators to secure direct and in-kind donations, including sponsorships, event support, and promotional activities.
  • Represent the programme at tourism-related events to present on conservation activities, opportunities, and challenges.
  • Identify potential partners and cultivate relationships to increase financial and in-kind support.
  • Organize fundraising events and campaigns in collaboration with tourism operators.
  • Monitor and report on fundraising effectiveness, providing regular updates to the Programme Manager.

3. Reporting and Monitoring

  • Track fundraising progress and compile reports for internal stakeholders and partners.
  • Evaluate the impact of fundraising activities and recommend improvements.
  • Gather feedback from tourism operators on communication materials and adjust as needed.

4. Relationship Management

  • Serve as the main point of contact for tourism operators supporting SECP.
  • Build long-term, meaningful relationships to encourage sustained support for programme activities.
  • Coordinate responses to media requests related to FZS’s work in the Serengeti with appropriate staff.

Key Deliverables

  • Develop and execute communication and fundraising strategies targeting nature-based tourism businesses.
  • Secure a specified number of partnerships with tourism operators, including financial or in-kind support.
  • Produce and distribute communication materials highlighting community conservation efforts and tourism partnerships.
  • Provide monthly reports on communication and fundraising activities.
  • Coordinate 2–4 fundraising events or campaigns annually.

Qualifications, Knowledge, and Experience

Essential

  • Bachelor’s degree in communications, fundraising, marketing, or related field.
  • Minimum of 3 years’ experience in communication and fundraising.
  • Strong knowledge of conservation issues.
  • Proven ability to engage stakeholders and build successful partnerships.
  • Experience writing and producing communication materials (newsletters, social media content, reports).
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and experience with CRM systems.
  • Fluency in English; Kiswahili knowledge is an advantage.
  • Basic photography and editing skills; more advanced experience desirable.
  • Proficiency in Adobe Illustrator, Canva, and other design programs.

Desirable

  • Master’s degree in communications, fundraising, or marketing.
  • Knowledge of the Serengeti Ecosystem and conservation/community development challenges.
  • Demonstrated fundraising experience in nature-based tourism and conservation sectors.
  • Knowledge of the tourism sector and its stakeholders in Tanzania and East Africa.
