Job Title: Corporate Credit Officer

Department: Corporate Banking
Reporting Line: Relationship Manager / Credit Management Team


Job Summary

The role holder is a member of the Corporate Banking team responsible for originating, structuring, and monitoring credit solutions for corporate clients, ensuring sound risk management, regulatory compliance, and high-quality portfolio performance.


Key Roles and Responsibilities

1. Credit Origination

  • Assess and analyse credit requests to develop appropriate financial solutions for corporate customers.
  • Engage clients to gather deal requirements, financial statements, and relevant documentation for due diligence.
  • Work closely with Relationship Managers (RMs) and product partners to structure suitable credit facilities.
  • Prepare comprehensive credit applications and submissions for approval by Sanctioners.
  • Coordinate compliance pre-clearances and ensure all regulatory and internal requirements are met.
  • Support documentation execution and drawdown of approved facilities.
  • Analyse historical and projected financials to identify key risks and covenant compliance.
  • Act as a joint credit contact point between Relationship Managers and Credit Teams.
  • Attend customer meetings to resolve or discuss credit-related matters.
  • Ensure strict adherence to internal credit policies and regulatory guidelines.
  • Liaise with Credit Teams for limit approvals and mandate alignment.
  • Seek approval for account excesses when required.

2. Portfolio Monitoring

  • Monitor portfolio quality by tracking past dues, excesses, and compliance with sanction conditions.
  • Ensure timely submission of Early Warning (EW), RRCC, and excess reports.
  • Monitor risk triggers, covenants, and credit conditions and escalate concerns appropriately.
  • Collect and analyse customer financial information on an ongoing basis.
  • Ensure 100% KYC compliance for all borrowing clients.
  • Conduct research and provide technical input on proposed securities.
  • Proactively identify early warning accounts to prevent deterioration into recovery.
  • Liaise with Credit Teams to ensure timely resolution of credit queries.
  • Participate in Relationship Team meetings and contribute improvement ideas.
  • Conduct stress testing and prepare industry studies where required.
  • Prepare credit opinion reports and maintain audit-ready credit records at all times.

3. Risk and Control Objectives

  • Apply Absa’s risk frameworks and promote a strong risk culture.
  • Understand end-to-end processes, associated risks, and control requirements.
  • Adhere strictly to all Absa policies, procedures, and risk standards.
  • Report risk events and incidents through approved channels and support root-cause analysis.
  • Proactively identify control weaknesses and recommend improvements.
  • Maintain vigilance against money laundering risks and support AML efforts through KYC, transaction monitoring, and reporting.
  • Ensure completion of all mandatory training within required timelines.
  • Escalate policy deviations to Unit Head, Head of Credit, or Operational Risk Controls as required.

4. Regulatory and Business Conduct

Qualifications and Training

Education

  • Bachelor’s Degree or Advanced Diploma in Business, Commerce, or Management Studies (Required)

Professional Qualifications (Advantageous)

  • A.C.I.B. or other relevant professional banking qualifications
