Position Description: Boilermaker – Plant Engineering Maintenance

The Barrick Africa Middle East Team is seeking to recruit a Boilermaker to join and grow our Plant Engineering Maintenance Team.

Key Responsibilities

Health, Safety & Environment

  • Ensure full compliance with Barrick and regulatory health, safety, and environmental policies and procedures.
  • Report all HSE incidents and hazards using the appropriate reporting systems.
  • Perform task risk assessments (JHA, FLRA).
  • Adhere strictly to isolation, lock-out, and permit-to-work procedures.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and environmentally safe work area in line with 5S principles.
  • Demonstrate safe work practices and intervene immediately when unsafe acts or conditions are observed.

Maintenance & Fabrication

  • Conduct daily inspections and execute planned and unplanned maintenance on plant equipment.
  • Perform high-quality mechanical repairs in compliance with applicable codes, standards, and safety requirements.
  • Fabricate, weld, assemble, and install metal structures and components including chutes, boxes, pipes, reducers, bends, and Y-pieces.
  • Repair and maintain metal equipment and steel structures of varying sizes.
  • Apply best maintenance practices when repairing chutes, steel tanks, pipes, and structural steel.
  • Apply standard paint coatings to new and repaired steel structures.
  • Assess welded surfaces and structures to identify defects and ensure quality standards are met.
  • Inspect pressure vessels, tanks, chutes, and piping systems to identify leaks, weak points, or defects and carry out repairs.
  • Read and interpret drawings, diagrams, sketches, and blueprints to determine work scope, materials, and timelines.

Operational Support

  • Ensure plant equipment operates within acceptable limits and report deviations promptly.
  • Maintain mechanical tools and equipment in accordance with Barrick and OEM standards.
  • Complete breakdown and preventive maintenance work orders on time and provide accurate feedback.
  • Remove defective parts using appropriate tools, cranes, and hoists.
  • Manage equipment, parts, and consumable inventories and coordinate requirements with the supervisor.
  • Perform basic mechanical fitting, rubber lining, scaffolding, and rigging work as directed.
  • Conduct regular inspections of plant equipment and steel structures.
  • Maintain effective communication across shifts and perform proper shift handovers.
  • Carry out any other duties as assigned by the line supervisor.

Licensing & Competency

  • Attain and maintain all required licenses and authorizations, including:
    • Basic Rigging
    • Working at Heights
    • Machine Operation (e.g., Forklift)

Qualification Requirements

  • Technical or Vocational education, apprenticeship, or on-the-job training (FTC, VETA, IMTT Trade Test, or equivalent).
  • Sound knowledge of mining safety regulations and best practices.

Experience and Competencies

  • Minimum of three (3) years post-apprenticeship experience working on heavy mobile or plant equipment.
  • Experience in both open pit and underground mining is essential.
  • Prior maintenance experience in the mining industry is advantageous.
  • Strong working knowledge of equipment safety standards.
  • Proficient in welding techniques including Arc, TIG, and MIG.
  • Excellent knowledge of welding machinery, electrical equipment, and hand tools.
  • Ability to understand and interpret technical drawings and manuals.
  • Strong hazard identification and risk assessment skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.
  • Strong technical and strategic planning abilities.
  • Ability to work effectively in a high-pressure environment with minimal supervision.
  • Highly professional conduct with a strong work ethic and commitment to continuous improvement.
  • Adaptable to change management processes and performance-driven.
  • Physically fit and capable of performing demanding tasks.
  • Motivated, engaged, and aligned with Barrick’s values and culture.

Licensing

  • VETA Driving Certificate.
  • Valid Tanzanian driving license Class B, C, D, and E.
  • Ability to drive manual (stick-shift) transmission vehicles.

About the Team

The North Mara Gold Mine is located in north-west Tanzania, within the Tarime District of the Mara Region, approximately 100 km east of Lake Victoria and 20 km south of the Kenyan border.

North Mara commenced commercial production in 2002 and operates as a combined open pit and underground mine, consisting of:

  • Gokona (Underground)
  • Nyabirama (Open Pit)

The processing plant has a capacity of approximately 8,000 tonnes of ore per day.
