Purpose of the Role

The Engineer 3 – Underground Mine Planning (Long-Term Planning) is responsible for developing optimal underground mine development options, life-of-mine schedules, production forecasts, and budgets. The role ensures that underground mine plans meet budgeted physical targets while aligning with GGML’s vision, values, and strategic objectives.


Key Accountabilities

  • Contribute to the development and continuous improvement of systems within the Mine Planning Section of the Technical Services Department to deliver executable mine schedules and maximize the value of the underground orebody.
  • Under the direction of the Mine Planning Superintendent, deliver accurate underground physical schedules aligned with the confidence levels of reserves and resources across the full life of asset.
  • Support the development of organizational capability within the Technical Services Department to successfully deliver the Mining Department budget and Life of Mine (LoM) plans.
  • Identify and evaluate underground resources to optimize the development potential of the Geita Gold Mine asset.
  • Identify planning and operational options that enable step-change improvements in productivity, cost efficiency, and mining performance.
  • Authorize and oversee the preparation of underground mine physical schedules developed by the Planning Engineer II, ensuring accuracy consistent with reserve and resource confidence.
  • Develop, implement, and maintain planning systems that promote effective work planning, safe work practices, and performance monitoring.
  • Establish and maintain standards, procedures, and guidelines for all planning activities, ensuring appropriate document control.
  • Support Operational Excellence initiatives and contribute to value creation within the Mine Planning and Scheduling function.
  • Ensure all activities are conducted safely and in full compliance with company standards, procedures, and statutory requirements.
  • Build and maintain effective working relationships with colleagues, contractors, consultants, and other stakeholders to resolve issues and deliver objectives.
  • Apply GGML Management and People Practices within the Underground Technical Services function.
  • Monitor performance against plan, identify variances, and implement corrective actions.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Mining Engineering or a related discipline.
  • Registered with the Engineers Registration Board (ERB).

Experience

  • Minimum of seven (7) years’ operational experience in an underground mining environment.

Technical Skills and Competencies

  • Advanced proficiency in underground mine design and scheduling software, including:
    • Deswik (advanced level)
    • Datamine Studio UG
    • EPS
    • Ventis
    • Vulcan
    • Mine Stope Optimizer (MSO)
  • Demonstrated capability across resource and reserve estimation, underground mine design, infrastructure specification, mine scheduling, equipment selection, cost estimation, budgeting, and discounted cash flow (DCF) analysis.
  • Experience managing contractors and consultants.
  • Strong understanding of mining value drivers and key risk factors to support informed decision-making and optimization.
  • Excellent written, reporting, and verbal communication skills.
  • Proven ability to communicate effectively across all organizational levels and build strong professional networks.
