Position Summary
The Field Assistant will support vegetable germplasm regeneration, characterization, and seed post-harvest activities, ensuring production and maintenance of high-quality, genetically authentic seed. The position is based at WorldVeg’s regional office in Arusha, Tanzania.
Key Responsibilities
Germplasm & Field Operations
- Implement germplasm regeneration and characterization according to genebank SOPs, technical guidelines, and experimental protocols
- Ensure accurate labeling, documentation, and tracking of genebank accessions
- Collect, record, and manage data on morphological and agronomic traits, including high-quality photographic documentation
- Collect and prepare plant samples (leaves, seeds, tissues) for laboratory analysis
- Supervise routine field management activities such as irrigation, fertilizer application, weeding, staking, pest and disease monitoring, and IPM practices
- Supervise casual laborers during land preparation, planting, maintenance, harvesting, and post-harvest operations
Seed Post-Harvest & Genebank Support
- Ensure proper harvesting, drying, cleaning, processing, and temporary storage of regenerated seed
- Support additional genebank operations: seed processing, health integrity testing, germination testing, and inventory management
- Comply with safety, biosafety, and phytosanitary regulations
- Perform other duties related to genebank operations as assigned
Required Qualifications and Competencies
Technical:
- Minimum BSc in Agriculture (major in horticulture or related field)
- At least 1 year of experience in vegetable field trials or related activities
- Knowledge of plant physiology, diseases, and insect-pests of vegetable crops
- Familiarity with field layout and experimental designs is an added advantage
- Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel)

Additional Information
- This is a Nationally Recruited Staff (NRS) position
- Initial appointment: 6 months, with possible extension based on funding and performance
