Position: Field Worker (1 Post)

Location: Bagamoyo, Tanzania
Department: Laboratory / Insectary Operations


Job Summary

Ifakara Health Institute (IHI) is seeking a qualified and motivated Field Worker to support day-to-day laboratory and insectary operations.

The role focuses on maintaining mosquito colonies, supporting experiments, and ensuring compliance with Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) standards.


Key Responsibilities

Laboratory & Insectary Operations

  • Support daily implementation of research studies under GLP standards
  • Maintain insectary facilities, equipment, and tools
  • Monitor room conditions (e.g., temperature) and report malfunctions

Mosquito Rearing & Handling

  • Feed larvae with approved food
  • Feed adult mosquitoes using human arm and membrane feeding techniques
  • Maintain mosquito colonies following Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)

Field & Experimental Work

  • Conduct entomological fieldwork as assigned
  • Prepare mosquitoes for experiments according to SOPs
  • Assist in implementing laboratory experiments

Compliance & Record Keeping

  • Maintain accurate records in line with GLP requirements
  • Ensure strict adherence to SOPs and insectary guidelines
  • Maintain cleanliness and safety within the insectary
  • Ensure proper disposal of laboratory waste

Health & Safety

  • Comply with weekly malaria screening
  • Follow laboratory safety standards at all times

Additional Duties

  • Attend required training sessions
  • Perform any other duties assigned by supervisors

Work Specifications

  • Strict adherence to insectary guidelines and SOPs
  • Routine maintenance of mosquito containment systems
  • Daily care and monitoring of mosquito colonies
  • Proper handling and storage of laboratory equipment

Qualifications

  • Form Four / Advanced Secondary Education or related field

Experience

  • Proven experience in:
    • Mosquito rearing
    • Preparing mosquitoes for laboratory experiments

Skills & Competencies

  • Strong technical skills in mosquito handling and insectary work
  • Attention to detail and accuracy in record keeping
  • Ability to follow procedures and safety standards

Language Requirements

  • Good communication skills in:
    • English
    • Swahili
