Finance Officer
Position Overview
The Finance Officer will oversee and manage financial operations across projects and organizational activities. This role ensures sound financial management, compliance, and accountability, supporting project teams and leadership in maintaining financial integrity, efficiency, and sustainability.
Key Roles and Responsibilities
- Manage day-to-day accounting functions, including general ledger entries, cash and bank management, payroll processing, and project-related disbursements.
- Maintain accurate, complete, and up-to-date financial records in compliance with organizational policies, donor requirements, and accounting standards.
- Support the development and monitoring of project and organizational budgets, ensuring alignment with approved work plans and donor agreements.
- Track expenditures against approved budgets and flag variances, risks, or compliance issues to management in a timely manner.
- Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports for internal management and donor reporting.
- Support donor financial reporting, including budget tracking, expenditure analysis, and documentation for grant compliance.
- Ensure timely statutory compliance, including PAYE, NSSF, SDL, VAT, and other regulatory obligations.
- Support internal and external audits by preparing financial schedules, documentation, and responding to audit queries.
- Implement and maintain internal controls to safeguard organizational assets and ensure financial accuracy and transparency.
- Support procurement processes by ensuring financial due diligence, budget availability, and proper documentation in line with organizational policies.
- Maintain asset registers, inventory records, and financial documentation related to office and project resources.
- Provide financial guidance to program and operations teams to promote sound financial management practices.
Required Qualifications and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Economics, or a related field.
- Minimum of 1 year experience in financial management within an NGO or development context.
- Proven experience in accounting, project financial management, and compliance.
- Familiarity with financial reporting, internal controls, and non-profit accounting principles.
Core Skills and Competencies
- Strong numerical, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent report writing and communication skills.
- Proficiency in accounting software (e.g., QuickBooks) and MS Office, particularly Excel, including financial modeling.
- Attention to detail and high accuracy in financial data management.
- Ability to research, analyze, and prepare financial reports.
