The Geita Gold Mine (GGM) is a major gold mining operation located in the Lake Victoria goldfields of Tanzania.

Ownership and Location

• Owner/Operator: The mine is wholly-owned and operated by Geita Gold Mining Limited (GGML), a subsidiary of the global gold producer AngloGold Ashanti (AGA).
• Location: It is situated in the northwestern part of Tanzania, in the Geita Region, approximately 120 km from Mwanza City and about 4 km west of the town of Geita. It lies near the southern shores of Lake Victoria.

Operations and Production

• Mine Type: GGM is a multiple open-pit and underground operation. Currently, mining activities are conducted at the Nyankanga underground mine and the Nyamulilima open pit.
• Processing: The operation utilizes a large-capacity Carbon-in-Leach (CIL) processing plant capable of handling hard ore.
• Production: It is one of AngloGold Ashanti’s flagship assets. Production in recent years has often been in the range of around 500,000 ounces of gold per annum.

History

• Early Mining: Gold mineralization was first discovered in the Geita district in 1898. The first large-scale mine was developed in 1934, and the area produced over 1 million ounces of gold from underground operations between 1936 and 1966.
• Modern Revival: The modern, large-scale operation re-commenced production in 2000.
• Full Ownership: Following the merger of AngloGold and Ashanti Goldfields Corporation, the mine came under the full control of AngloGold Ashanti in 2004.

Economic and Social Impact

• Employment: The mine is a major employer, with thousands of employees and contractors, the vast majority of whom are Tanzanian nationals.
• Community Investment: GGM is heavily involved in community development initiatives, including significant investments in education, healthcare, water projects (such as the Geita water project), and road infrastructure in the surrounding communities.
• Sustainability: The mine has taken steps toward decarbonization by connecting to the Tanzanian national electricity grid (TANESCO), which is partially supplied by renewable energy, to reduce its reliance on diesel power generation.
