Williamson Diamonds Limited (WDL) is Tanzania’s only large-scale diamond producer, operating an open-pit mine based on the 146-hectare Mwadui Kimberlite Pipe, one of the world’s largest economic kimberlites.

For over 80 years, WDL has co-existed with surrounding communities while implementing sustainable development programs focused on improving livelihoods and promoting long-term socio-economic growth around the Mwadui Mine Site.


Role Summary

The Head of Electrical Engineering is responsible for managing all process electrical systems, controls, and instrumentation maintenance across the operation. The role ensures high plant availability, reliability, safety compliance, and continuous improvement through effective planning, execution, leadership, and coordination of electrical engineering activities.


Key Duties & Responsibilities

Electrical Engineering & Maintenance

  • Manage design, maintenance, and repair of electrical, control, and instrumentation systems including:
    • Electrical infrastructure
    • PLC systems
    • Instrumentation for conveyors, crushers, scrubbers, mills, pumps, screens, and workshop tools
  • Ensure equipment reliability, availability, and operational capability
  • Implement preventive maintenance programs in line with OEM requirements
  • Conduct routine and ad hoc inspections as part of preventive maintenance plans
  • Maintain accurate maintenance schedules, records, and documentation

Safety, Compliance & Risk Management

  • Promote a Safety-First culture through risk assessments and strict adherence to safety standards
  • Ensure compliance with statutory regulations, company policies, and mine safety requirements
  • Analyse equipment failures to determine root causes and implement corrective actions
  • Oversee radiation safety systems and risk mitigation initiatives

Leadership & Operations Management

  • Lead, supervise, and develop electrical engineering teams
  • Manage manpower, materials, tools, machinery, and assigned operational areas
  • Provide technical leadership, mentoring, and capability development
  • Build strong working relationships internally and externally, including with TANESCO
  • Coordinate with other departments to support production and operational targets

Projects, Strategy & Continuous Improvement

  • Develop and implement electrical engineering strategies aligned with operational objectives
  • Manage electrical projects, upgrades, and capital works
  • Drive continuous improvement, efficiency, PLC optimization, and cost control initiatives
  • Control maintenance budgets and optimize maintenance costs
  • Support plant improvement projects and technical modifications

Minimum Qualifications & Experience

Education & Professional Registration

  • Bachelor’s Degree in:
    • Electrical Engineering
    • Electronics Engineering
    • Instrumentation & Control Engineering
  • Professional registration with ERB (mandatory)
  • Additional professional memberships and certifications (added advantage)

Experience

  • Minimum 9 years’ relevant experience in Electrical Engineering & Instrumentation
  • Experience preferably within Mining or Production environments
  • Proven background in:
    • Preventive maintenance
    • Construction and procurement
    • Technical innovation and system modification

Technical Skills

  • Strong knowledge of CMMS, engineering software, and quality control systems
  • PLC systems experience (Siemens PLCs is an added advantage)
  • Strong technical mathematics skills
  • Ability to maintain plant electrical and instrumentation equipment
  • Excellent verbal and written communication in English and Kiswahili
  • Valid driving licence
