BRAC Enterprises – Background and Overview
BRAC Enterprises is the for-profit, socially driven arm of BRAC, the world’s largest development organization. BRAC was founded in 1972 in Bangladesh by Sir Fazle Hasan Abed, initially as a relief operation following the Bangladesh War of Independence. Over time, BRAC evolved into a global leader in sustainable development by integrating enterprise-led solutions to fight poverty.
Origins and Evolution
- Origin (1972): Established in response to post-war poverty in Bangladesh, BRAC adopted a holistic development model that combined humanitarian assistance with long-term economic empowerment.
- Shift to Enterprise: To ensure sustainability, BRAC created social enterprises that could generate revenue to fund and strengthen its development programs.
- Early Initiatives: One of the earliest and most notable enterprises, Aarong (1978), was launched to secure fair market access and fair pricing for women artisans.
- Portfolio Expansion: The enterprise portfolio later expanded into dairy, poultry, seed production, and more recently into education, financial inclusion, and digital solutions across Africa and Asia.
Purpose and Business Model
- Financial Sustainability: BRAC Enterprises are designed to be commercially viable, with profits reinvested into BRAC’s non-profit development initiatives.
- Livelihood Creation: The enterprises focus on building inclusive value chains that create stable livelihoods for underserved communities.
- Market Linkages: By directly connecting rural producers to urban and international markets, BRAC Enterprises eliminate intermediaries and ensure better income distribution.
