MSMT2 Project – Laboratory Officer / Research Assistant

Responsibilities

  • Participate in sample collection, processing, and analysis in accordance with project needs and approved Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
  • Work closely with the MSMT2 team to ensure preventive maintenance of laboratory equipment is conducted as scheduled.
  • Process laboratory samples and accurately record all test results in line with SOPs for all specimens received.
  • Ensure proper storage, documentation, and tracking of specimens and records in compliance with MSMT2 project SOPs.
  • Participate in planning and execution of routine and specialized technical procedures, including troubleshooting during laboratory work.
  • Collaborate with the MSMT2 team to maintain laboratory equipment standards, cleanliness, and functionality in accordance with engineers’ guidance, equipment manuals, and safety guidelines.
  • Under the supervision of Senior Project Scientists, support effective communication and coordination with project members, hospital staff, and field teams to ensure successful project implementation.
  • Participate in MSMT2 quality control programs in compliance with Good Clinical Practice (GCP) and Good Clinical Laboratory Practice (GCLP) to ensure reliability of testing procedures and proper functioning of laboratory equipment.
  • Work with the MSMT2 project team and partner institutions to comply with internal and external regulatory authority requirements related to quality control, health and safety, and inspection practices.
  • Attend and actively contribute to research meetings, scientific discussions, and journal clubs organized by the MSMT2 project.
  • Participate in MSMT2 training programs aimed at developing skills in manuscript preparation and scientific publication.
  • Perform any other duties as assigned by the Project Principal Investigator or other designated supervisors.

  • Demonstrated practical and technical aptitude with strong potential for further training relevant to the MSMT2 project.
  • Strong problem-solving, decision-making, critical thinking, and analytical skills.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Effective time management and teamwork skills.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills in both English and Kiswahili.

Essential Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Medical Laboratory Sciences or Molecular Biology and Biotechnology obtained within the past 24 months.
  • Minimum first-degree GPA of 3.8 with demonstrated academic excellence and strong potential for scientific leadership development.

Required Experience

  • Experience in genomics with hands-on practical skills in molecular biology techniques (for laboratory science applicants).
  • At least one (1) year of experience in a related or similar research field.
  • Experience in mathematical or statistical modelling is an added advantage.
  • Experience with data visualization and analysis tools, particularly R, is highly preferred.

Language Requirements

  • Proficiency in both Kiswahili and English (written and spoken).
