Job Purpose
The Machine Specialist is responsible for maintaining, repairing, and optimising plant equipment to ensure:
- Maximum plant availability
- High product quality
- Cost efficiency
The role also supports shift teams through technical expertise, problem-solving, and operational guidance.
Key Responsibilities
1. Operational Support
- Provide specialist support to shift teams during operations
- Assist in troubleshooting and problem-solving
- Guide teams on machine operation and fault handling
- Coach and mentor operators on equipment usage
- Monitor machine performance and ensure rated speeds
- Participate in plant optimisation trials
- Develop and update work instructions
- Be available for shift work and call-outs
2. Planned Maintenance
- Participate in maintenance planning meetings
- Execute maintenance tasks as per schedule
- Provide feedback on incomplete or rescheduled work
- Support team members during maintenance activities
- Complete SAP-related administrative tasks
- Contribute to maintenance reviews and improvements
- Train operators on autonomous maintenance
3. Routine Maintenance
- Perform cleaning, lubrication, and inspections
- Execute scheduled routine maintenance tasks
- Identify and resolve equipment issues
- Communicate additional maintenance needs to planners
- Conduct condition monitoring activities
4. Running Repairs
- Carry out or support repairs on plant equipment
- Diagnose faults and determine corrective actions
- Engage external specialists (OEMs) when required
- Verify effectiveness of repairs
- Complete all repair-related documentation in SAP
- Escalate unresolved issues for planned maintenance
5. Problem Solving
- Apply structured problem-solving techniques
- Escalate complex issues when necessary
- Support and coach team members in troubleshooting
- Participate in both situational and systemic problem solving
6. Safety & Housekeeping
- Ensure safe working practices at all times
- Identify and report unsafe conditions
- Follow all company policies and procedures
- Maintain housekeeping standards using 4S principles
7. New Product Development (NPD) Support
- Support NPD trials on production assets
- Ensure compliance with NPD procedures
- Document all engineering changes accurately
8. Training & Development
- Train, coach, and assess operators
- Develop technical standards and work instructions
- Promote continuous learning and team development
Qualifications & Experience
Minimum Requirements
- Degree in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering (Instrumentation is an added advantage)
- Minimum 5 years’ experience in engineering (FMCG experience preferred)
- Strong computer literacy (Microsoft Office)
- Knowledge of SAP systems
- Experience with packaging machines and operations
