Job Overview

UN Women seeks a Consultant (or Consultant Team) to conduct a comprehensive mapping of violence against women and children (VAWC) in Kaskazini Unguja and Kaskazini Pemba.

The assignment aims to:

  • Identify forms of violence limiting women’s participation in agriculture value chains
  • Examine gender stereotypes and discriminatory practices
  • Provide actionable recommendations to improve prevention and response mechanisms

Objectives of the Assignment

  • Map forms of violence affecting women in low-lying areas.
  • Assess how these barriers impact participation in key value chains:
    • Seaweed
    • Sea cucumber
    • Cassava
    • Banana farming
  • Identify opportunities to address gender inequality and harmful social norms.

Key Responsibilities / Tasks

1. Inception & Planning

  • Prepare and present an inception report outlining:
    • Understanding of the assignment
    • Scope of work
    • Methodology and tools

2. Research & Data Collection

  • Conduct desk review of existing reports on VAWG in Zanzibar.
  • Perform qualitative and quantitative mapping of:
    • Forms of violence
    • Harmful norms and stereotypes

3. Stakeholder & Systems Mapping

  • Map existing initiatives addressing VAWG:
    • Policies, strategies, and programs
    • Stakeholders and community actors
  • Identify services available to survivors:
    • Type, accessibility, coverage, and effectiveness
  • Map referral pathways and community-led interventions

4. Analysis & Reporting

  • Identify lessons learned and best practices.
  • Develop strategic recommendations for improving prevention and response.
  • Facilitate stakeholder consultations for validation.

Qualifications

Education

  • Master’s degree in:
    • Social Sciences
    • Gender Studies

    • Legal Studies or related field

Experience

  • Proven experience in:
    • Conducting assessments and research studies
    • Gender-based violence (GBV) programs or evaluations
    • Policy development and strategy design
  • Experience working in Tanzania / East & Southern Africa
  • Experience with UN agencies is an advantage
  • Strong analytical, research, and stakeholder engagement skills

Language Requirements

  • Fluency in English and Swahili (written and spoken)
