Role Overview

The Open Cast Mining Superintendent is responsible for the safe, efficient, and cost-effective production of ore and waste in line with the approved mining plan.

This is a senior leadership role requiring strong operational oversight, people management, and adherence to safety, environmental, and production standards.

Key Responsibilities

1. Production & Operations Management

  • Ensure safe and efficient production aligned with the mining plan.
  • Oversee:
    • Drilling
    • Blasting
    • Excavation
    • Dumping
    • Construction activities
  • Interpret mine plans and communicate production targets clearly.

2. Safety & Environmental Compliance

  • Enforce adherence to safety policies and procedures.
  • Ensure compliance with environmental management practices.
  • Conduct risk assessments before commencement of work.

3. Team Leadership & Development

  • Lead and manage mining teams and subcontractors.
  • Set performance objectives and provide continuous feedback.
  • Support training, coaching, and succession planning.

4. Coordination & Stakeholder Engagement

  • Collaborate with:
    • Mining Engineers
    • Geologists
    • Processing Plant teams
  • Ensure crusher feed tonnage and blend meet operational plans.

5. Financial & Cost Management

  • Manage departmental budgets and control operational costs.
  • Monitor expenditure on:
    • Labour
    • Equipment
    • Consumables
    • Services
  • Identify and reduce sources of operational losses.

6. Reporting & Planning

  • Develop and maintain reporting systems for:
    • Production
    • Metal recovery
    • Operating costs
  • Support Life of Mine (LOM) planning and forecasting.

7. Leadership Support

  • Deputize for the Mining Manager when required.
  • Ensure compliance with Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mining Engineering or equivalent.
  • Mine Overseer’s Certificate of Competency (advantageous).
  • Knowledge of:
    • Environmental policies
    • Mines Health and Safety regulations

Experience & Competencies

  • 7–10 years’ progressive experience in mining, including large-scale operations.
  • Strong experience in:
    • Budgeting and cost control
    • Capital planning
    • Team training and development
  • Solid knowledge of open cast mining operations.
  • Understanding of mining and civil engineering principles.
  • Strong communication skills (English).
  • Computer literacy and reporting skills.
  • Valid driving license.
