Background
Savannas Forever Tanzania (SFTZ) is seeking a qualified consultant to design a participatory enterprise and microfinance curriculum tailored for Maasai youth and women under 30 engaged in restoration-linked seed and forage enterprises.
The curriculum will support emerging seed champions and forage producers to strengthen their business capacity while reinforcing sustainable rangeland restoration outcomes.
Scope of Work
The consultant will design a practical, field-ready curriculum that builds participant capacity in the following areas:
- Value Chain Literacy: Native seed → forage production → livestock productivity → market linkages
- Basic Business Planning & Financial Management
- Savings Groups & Internal Lending Models: Including VSLA-style approaches
- Pricing & Profit Calculation: Simple financial record keeping
- Risk Planning & Enterprise Diversification
- Youth Leadership & Governance: Accountability and group management
Delivery Approach
- Designed for in-person training
- Adapted to rural, low-literacy contexts
- Uses highly participatory and visual learning methods
- Developed primarily in Swahili
- Integrates Maa terminology and cultural framing where appropriate
Expected Deliverables
- Structured training curriculum with detailed session plans and facilitator guide
- Participant-friendly training materials (low-literacy adapted tools)
- Practical exercises, case studies, and group activities
- Simple templates for:
- Budgeting
- Savings tracking
- Profit calculation
- Suggested monitoring indicators for tracking enterprise growth
Required Qualifications
- Demonstrated experience in enterprise development, microfinance, or VSLA programming
- Bachelor’s degree in Social Sciences (Master’s degree is an added advantage)
- Experience working with rural and/or pastoralist communities
- Strong participatory curriculum design skills
- Fluency in Swahili (required)
- Maa language skills (strongly preferred)
