Background

Doctors with Africa CUAMM is an international NGO that has been working in Tanzania for over 50 years to strengthen the health system and improve the well-being of vulnerable communities.

The organization focuses on improving healthcare services across the system, including:

  • Community health and referral systems
  • Antenatal care services
  • Quality improvement in health centers and hospitals

CUAMM prioritizes women and children’s health and uses an evidence-based approach to remove barriers that prevent communities from accessing quality healthcare services.

In partnership with the Ministry of Health Tanzania in Zanzibar, a Neonatal Units (NUs) assessment conducted in 2025 revealed key challenges including:

  • Lack of dedicated neonatal staff in many facilities
  • High patient-to-nurse ratios
  • Limited neonatal resuscitation expertise during high-risk deliveries
  • Inconsistent neonatal resuscitation training

To address these gaps, CUAMM committed to improving the number and competence of health workers delivering neonatal care, ensuring better care for newborns in delivery rooms and specialized neonatal units.
