Job Title: Assistant Relationship Manager – Key Accounts / Public Sector

Business Unit: Corporate & Investment Banking
Reporting To: Key Account Director / Head of Public Sector


Job Summary

The role holder supports the Key Account Director in driving business development and relationship management across key account portfolios in Tanzania. The position focuses on originating and coordinating large, structured transactions, developing appropriate credit solutions, monitoring portfolio performance, and supporting marketing and business development initiatives.


Key Responsibilities and Accountabilities

1. Relationship Management & Planning (20%)

  • Support the Key Account Director in developing and coordinating annual Customer Relationship Plans.
  • Collaborate with Product Specialists and Credit Risk teams to ensure a coordinated Group-wide approach.
  • Review Relationship Plans and translate them into quarterly action plans focused on wallet share growth.
  • Assist in addressing service improvement actions arising from customer complaints or feedback.

2. Deal Origination & Business Development (20%)

  • Conduct market research to identify target clients and emerging opportunities.
  • Prepare client strategies, pitch materials, and deal presentations.
  • Coordinate tenders, advertising, marketing, and sponsorship initiatives.
  • Support delivery of presentations to customers alongside senior management.
  • Undertake financial analysis to structure optimal funding and product solutions.

3. Sales & Service Delivery (20%)

  • Assist in planning and executing marketing approaches for new and existing business.
  • Identify and sell appropriate banking products to meet customer needs on both proactive and reactive bases.
  • Drive achievement of strategic targets through Group, regional, and local campaigns.
  • Attend team meetings to share market intelligence, competitor insights, and business updates.
  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with Public Sector and Key Account customers.
  • Identify and follow up on cross-selling opportunities.
  • Proactively manage customer expectations and deliver high-quality service.

4. Customer & Key Business Influencer (KBI) Engagement (20%)

  • Support customer seminars and KBI engagements to introduce new and evolving product offerings.
  • Gather customer feedback to inform product and service development.
  • Support the sale of complex financial solutions using a diagnostic, customer-centric approach.
  • Attend customer visits with the Head of Public Sector and/or Head of CIB.
  • Build and maintain effective relationships with KBIs and relevant stakeholders.
  • Conduct customer and industry research using trade journals, broker reports, online sources, Bloomberg, and rating agencies.

5. Business & Risk Management (20%)

  • Participate in meetings with customers, investment banks, rating agencies, and professional advisers.
  • Undertake industry and market research to support sound lending decisions.
  • Work closely with Corporate Credit Managers on the evaluation and execution of large, structured transactions (£5m–£1bn).
  • Assess business, credit, and operational risks associated with customer propositions.
  • Provide guidance on credit appetite and consult Specialist Credit teams as required.
  • Support change management initiatives aimed at improving processes, quality, and cost efficiency.

Risk and Control Objectives

  • Apply Absa’s risk frameworks and promote a strong risk culture.
  • Understand end-to-end processes and associated risks and controls.
  • Adhere strictly to Absa’s policies, procedures, and governance standards.
  • Report all risk incidents and issues through defined escalation channels.
  • Proactively identify control weaknesses and recommend improvements.
  • Complete all mandatory training within required timelines.

Experience and Other Requirements

  • Minimum 2 years’ experience in a customer-facing corporate banking or related role.

  • Proven experience in business development and sales within a competitive environment.
  • Strong networking capability with internal and external stakeholders.
