Job Opportunity: Research Scientist (Data Science & Mathematical Modelling – Health)

1. Job Summary
The position involves supporting data science, mathematical modelling, and infectious disease research, with a focus on health-related projects (especially malaria and vector control). The role provides opportunities to build technical skills in programming, machine learning, AI, and epidemiological modelling, while contributing to scientific research outputs and capacity building.
2. Key Responsibilities
A. Data Science & Modelling
- Execute data science and mathematical modelling tasks related to health
- Work on improving the Vector Control Optimization Model (VCOM) framework
- Support infectious disease modelling projects and technical reviews
B. Training & Capacity Building
- Participate in training to understand infectious disease biology (especially malaria)
- Develop skills in computer programming, machine learning, and AI
- Participate in grant applications for MSc and/or PhD support
C. Data Management & Analysis
- Manage and analyze data from mosquito and vector studies
- Apply statistical and computational tools for research analysis
D. Research & Scientific Output
- Assist in writing research reports and scientific manuscripts
- Contribute to dissemination of findings in:
- Technical working groups
- National and international conferences
E. General Support
- Support the Principal Investigator in research activities
- Undertake additional duties as assigned
3. Required Skills
A. Programming & Technical Skills
- Proficiency in one or more of the following:
- Java
- JavaScript
- HTML/CSS
- PHP
- SQL
B. Data Analysis & Statistical Tools
- Strong skills in data analysis using:
- Python
- R (highly preferred)
- STATA
- MATLAB
C. Core Competencies
- Strong data management and analytical skills
- Ability to work independently and in interdisciplinary teams
- Good teamwork in large-scale research environments
- Knowledge of mosquito biology and infectious diseases is an advantage
- Strong ambition to pursue MSc or PhD studies
4. Qualifications
Essential Qualification
- Bachelor’s degree (BA or BSc) in:
- Computer Science
- Computer Engineering
- Engineering
- Mathematics / Mathematical Modelling
- Health Informatics
- Economics
- OR any related field
5. Experience Requirements
Required Experience
- Experience in developing web-based database applications
- Mathematical modelling experience (mandatory for Research Scientist applicants)
- Experience in mobile application development (an advantage)
- Publication experience in peer-reviewed journals is an added advantage
6. Language Requirements
- Strong communication skills in English and Kiswahili
