Role Overview

The Superintendent – HME is responsible for leading the maintenance, reliability, and performance of heavy mobile equipment (HME) within open cast mining operations.

This is a senior leadership role requiring strong technical expertise, strategic planning, and people management to ensure safe, efficient, and cost-effective operations.

Key Responsibilities

1. Safety & Environmental Management

  • Ensure a safe and healthy working environment for all employees.
  • Enforce compliance with:
    • Safety procedures

  • Stop unsafe behaviors immediately.

2. Maintenance & Reliability Management

  • Work with planning, reliability, operations, and engineering teams to improve maintenance strategies:
    • Preventive Maintenance (PM)
    • Predictive Maintenance (PdM)
    • Tire management
    • Ground Engaging Tools (GETs)
    • Critical spares management
  • Optimize fuel consumption and equipment performance.
  • Lead initiatives for continuous improvement and cost reduction.

3. Leadership & People Development

  • Lead and develop the HME team.
  • Drive succession planning and development of national workforce talent.
  • Collaborate with training teams to enhance technical and managerial skills.
  • Promote Barrick’s culture and values within the team.

4. Technical Support & Problem Solving

  • Provide technical solutions for complex maintenance challenges.
  • Mentor staff in critical thinking and problem-solving approaches.

5. Budgeting & Cost Control

  • Support and lead development of Operational (OpEx) and Capital (CapEx) budgets.
  • Ensure timely submission and adherence to budgets.
  • Monitor and control maintenance-related expenditures.

6. Environmental Management System (EMS) Responsibilities

  • Ensure effectiveness of the environmental management system.
  • Align environmental objectives with organizational strategy.
  • Promote compliance and continuous improvement in environmental performance.

Qualifications

  • Degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field (preferred).
  • Heavy OEM certification (preferably CAT equipment).
  • Strong computer literacy:
    • MS Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook)
    • ERP systems (SAP, Pronto, Oracle, Ellipse)
  • Valid Tanzanian driving license.
  • Knowledge of Mines Health & Safety regulations.

Experience & Competencies

  • Minimum 10 years’ experience in open cast mining maintenance.
  • At least 6+ years in senior maintenance management roles.
  • Strong experience in:
    • Maintenance planning and execution
    • Equipment rebuilds for large earth-moving fleets
    • Budgeting and cost control
    • Condition monitoring systems
    • Reliability-based maintenance systems
  • Technical expertise in:
    • Electrical systems
    • Hydraulic and pneumatic systems
    • Diesel engines
    • Welding and diagnostics
  • Experience with tire management systems and best practices.
  • Strong leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills.
