Position Description: UG Leading Hand Electrician (Expatriate)

Role Overview
The UG Leading Hand Electrician is responsible for evaluating, assembling, installing, and maintaining electrical systems across surface and underground (UG) operations. This role ensures that all electrical infrastructure—from heavy machinery to complex reticulation networks—operates safely, efficiently, and in alignment with BGML Mining Safety Standards and cost-management goals.

Key Responsibilities
1. Network Management & Compliance
-
Control the entire surface and underground electrical reticulation network.
-
Perform statutory compliance inspections, audits, and rigorous electrical testing.
-
Conduct earth fault calculations and ensure HV/MV protection relays are correctly calibrated.

Compile detailed reports and presentations on power supply and consumption.
2. Maintenance & Technical Support
-
Troubleshooting: Perform fault finding and repair on AC/DC variable speed drives (VSD/VFD), soft starters, and instrumentation systems.

Mobile Plant: Diagnose and maintain electronic controlling systems on mobile equipment.

Predictive Systems: Utilize computerized planning and modeling to provide technical leadership for maintenance departments.

Safety Leadership: Implement cutting-edge electrical safety practices and processes.
3. Project Management & Design

Life of Mine (LOM): Calculate, plan, and execute long-term electrical supply and demand requirements.

Tendering: Prepare bid competitions, evaluate technical submissions, supervise contractors, and approve completed works.

Commissioning: Research, specify, and install electrical systems designed for demanding mine environments.

Collaboration: Work with Supply Chain and Project Managers to ensure projects remain on time and within budget.
4. Technical Execution

Interpret complex technical drawings and perform precision electrical/electronic measurements.

Install and test wiring/circuits up to 1000V AC and 1500V DC.

Perform high-reliability manual soldering/de-soldering of electronic components.

Manage inventory by ensuring critical spares are ordered to prevent production downtime.
Qualification & Experience Requirements
Education & Certifications
-
Required: Bachelor of Electrical Engineering or equivalent post-trade qualifications.
-
Preferred: Proficiency in AutoCAD Electrical and SAP Plant Maintenance.
Professional Experience
-
Minimum of 5 years in Electrical Engineering.
-
Proven experience in high voltage (HV) engineering and electrical machine design/execution.
-
Strong knowledge of control systems, including SCADA and PLC.
-
Expertise in power distribution systems (Transformers, MDBs, and MCCs).
-
Experience managing large-scale projects using MS Project or equivalent.
Additional Assets

Previous experience in the Mining Industry.

Experience working as an expatriate within Africa.
