Position Purpose

The Maintenance Fitter will be responsible for diagnostic fault finding on mechanical and electrical systems, breakdown repairs, and servicing of heavy mining equipment as guided by the immediate supervisor and trainer.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Comply with all HS&E policies, procedures and instructions, including the correct use of safety devices and protective equipment.
  • Promptly report hazardous situations that cannot be corrected personally and take necessary action to eliminate or control hazards.
  • Immediately report any accident or injury arising in the course of work.
  • Comply with all company policies and procedures as displayed and amended from time to time.
  • Take reasonable care of personal safety and the safety of other persons who may be affected by work activities.
  • Perform pre-start checks and SWICs.
  • Ensure inspections and maintenance are carried out on all equipment before use.
  • Ensure all tools are serviceable and safe.
  • Work to minimise equipment downtime and maximise productivity.
  • Liaise with the Underground Shift Supervisor to:
    • Ensure all work is performed in a safe and efficient manner.
    • Advise when equipment is out of service and when it can be returned to service.
  • Carry out scheduled servicing of mobile equipment safely and in accordance with the applicable service sheet.
  • Utilise skills and experience to minimise machinery downtime.
  • Ensure maintenance activities are correctly recorded.
  • Maintain a high level of housekeeping in workshops and working areas at all times.
  • Ensure parts are maintained at minimum stock levels.
  • Read and interpret service and spare parts manuals.
  • Report all equipment faults to the Maintenance Supervisor/Foreman for scheduling into the workshop.
  • Ensure site and maintenance procedures are maintained.

Essential Requirements

  • Previous experience working within the underground mining industry is essential.
  • Strong background working with underground mobile mining equipment, including equipment from manufacturers such as:
    • Caterpillar
    • Normet
    • Sandvik
    • Mercedes
    • Toyota
    • RCT
    • Volvo
  • At least 2 years of post-apprenticeship experience.
  • High level of skill in troubleshooting problems on mining equipment.
  • Good knowledge of loader and truck maintenance.
  • Competence in:
    • Auto electrics
    • Hydraulic circuits
    • Diesel engine maintenance
  • Excellent service and maintenance approach to the job.
  • Willingness to learn, improve skills and gain further experience with mobile equipment.
  • Ability to drive a manual vehicle with a valid Tanzanian Driver’s Licence.
  • Basic First Aid knowledge.
  • Relevant trade qualification.
  • Completion of secondary school.
  • Basic numeracy skills.
  • Basic verbal and written English.
